Job Description
The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill an Environmental Scientist IV position in the Division of Air Quality.
This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.
Principal Duties
- Run air quality models and use data processing tools
- Work in a collaborative team environment with other air quality modelers
- Perform data analysis and visualization using R or / and Python
- Present technical results and information to staff, management, and agency stakeholders
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following :
- Professional or research experience in atmospheric science
- Experience with data analysis
- Familiarity with emissions inventory data and / or emissions modeling
- Experience programming in R and / or Python
- Experience working with large datafiles and datasets
- Experience with shell scripting in a UNIX / Linux environment
- Familiarity with Sparse Matrix Operating Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) emissions processing
- Experience with ArcGIS and / or Google Earth Engine, other GIS applications
- Experience with atmospheric science laboratory and / or field work
- Experience writing technical documents, including creating data visualizations
- Experience presenting results to staff, management, and agency stakeholders
- Experience developing State Implementation Plans and / or other reports for the Environmental Protection Agency
- Experience collaborating on a team and working on a variety of projects
Preferences
Preference may be given to candidates with the following :
- Bachelors of Science in meteorology, atmospheric science, environmental science, environmental engineering, or similar field;
- OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.
- Advanced degrees preferred
Job Series
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $28.16 - $42.
30 per hour, an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $33.14 - $49.79 per hour, or as an Environmental Scientist IV with a salary range of $36.96 - $55.51.
Work Location
This position may be eligible for a hybrid / flexible telework and in office schedule with two days a week in office. Our office is located 195 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Note : Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah. As such employees should either reside in Utah or be in the process of relocating to within 30 days of their start date.
