S. Navy's submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Looking for a lifetime career? Apply today!Job Description NNL is seeking an experienced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) engineer to support the design and optimization of more capable and cost-effective nuclear reactors for the US nuclear navy.

Responsibilities include development and evaluation of new design concepts using state-of-the-art CFD methods, software, and computer systems.

Responsibilities may also include qualification of analytical modeling methods and design of supplemental hydraulic tests where needed.

Additional responsibilities include leadership and development of more junior CFD engineers. Reactor system CFD models can be quite large with complex geometries and flow physics.

This is a unique opportunity to develop CFD models that effectively simulate complex reactor flow fields using the robust computational capability of NNL's High Performance Computing System.

The successful candidate will work as part a multi-discipline reactor design team focused on : (1) defining the design space and technology required for a next generation submarine targeting high-level notional goals;

and (2) evaluating reactor core cost versus performance capability trade-offs. This role requires frequent and effective communication with other core design, materials performance, core manufacturing, and reactor plant development engineers.

This position provides opportunities to influence technology development for performance gains and cost reductions. In addition, the candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, expertise in computational systems, the ability to work without close supervision and make sound independent decisions, and excellent teaming skills.

  • Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 9 years of relevant experience;
  • orMaster's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 7 years of relevant experience;
  • or Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part II qualified; orqualified SIT and 3 years EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program;

orCurrently or previously CRE qualified; or6 years as SRE; orSRE qualified and 9 years of experience.Preferred Skills Strong technical knowledge with respect to all aspects of the CFD analysis process is preferred, including CAD geometry model preparation, CFD mesh generation (hybrid meshes up to 500 million cells), experience with a variety of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) CFD solvers, and advanced post-processing techniques to successfully communicate simulation results to non-CFD practitioners.
