About the Role :
The Senior Payroll Manager will serve as the subject matter expert for all things related to payroll. The Senior Payroll Manager will formulate a vision and implement strategies that support overall goals for the Finance Team and the company.
This role will provide effective leadership, mentoring and guidance to team members to accomplish functional responsibilities.
With a focus on identifying opportunities for payroll process improvements, the Senior Payroll Manager will also oversee the company’s commission calculations of our sales organization.
The position will build strong relationships not only with the Finance Team, but with People and Organizational Health, Accounting, and Sales Leaders.
What You’ll Do :
- Provide organizational influence and strategic planning on opportunities to improve daily payroll and commission activities
- Lead, mentor and provide career development for Payroll Team members
- Prepare and process exempt and non-exempt payroll for all employees, including computation of commissions, bonuses and final paychecks
- Oversee the calculation of wages, differentials, holidays, overtime, and deductions to ensure compliance with Federal and state laws
- Reconcile payroll records for each pay cycle period and resolve payroll discrepancies as needed
- Maintain accurate records in payroll system and audit employee records to ensure compliance with federal / state wage and hour laws, payroll taxes, etc.
- Ensure accurate payments and deductions, including wage garnishments, tax levy, and benefit deductions
- Research and respond to inquiries regarding payroll related information, such as tax withholding, pay deduction, earning and verification of employment
- Prepares year-to-date, monthly, weekly payroll related reports for management
- Establishes policies and procedures for the payroll and payroll tax functions
- Prepare for recurring and ad-hoc reports as needed by management, finance / accounting
- Communicate actively with Operations, Accounting, POH, etc. to review cross-departmental impacts and reconcile data sharing
- Spearhead M&A payroll workstreams to ensure accurate and thorough integrations
- Responsible for all Payroll Tax activity works with outside vendor to ensure timely and accurate tax set-up, payments and filings
- Ensure payroll related regulatory filings are completed; support and coordinate audits such as workers compensation, 401(K), and annual audits
- Responsible for keeping abreast of Federal, State and Local regulatory changes and develops internal and external communications relative to these changes
- Develops procedures to ensure data integrity audits and integration with benefits, HRIS and payroll systems
- Ensures compliance with internal control standards and regulatory requirements
- Lead the continued implementation and management of commission / compensation management software
- Identify key areas and / or processes that need improvement, documentation, backup, and / or additional support
- May perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications & Interests :
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or Accounting preferred; Certified Payroll Professional Designation (CPP) strongly preferred
- Minimum of 8 years payroll experience in a multi-state payroll processing environment with supervisory experience required
- Two years’ experience with calculating commissions in a sales organization required
- Expert knowledge of accounting concepts and principles
- Strong knowledge of HR practices and principles
- Must have experience with UKG. Experience with other large enterprise level payroll systems like PeopleSoft, ADP strongly preferred
- Commission software experience is a huge plus
- Previous experience with merger and acquisitions as it relates to payroll integration
- Expert understanding of IRS and multi-state labor and tax law requirements, as well as the ability to proactively research and resolve such issues
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including manipulating and organizing large data sets
- Ability to lead and manage a team to meet deadlines while multi-tasking successfully in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to handle confidential matters sensitively and appropriately
- Proven experience establishing and maintaining strong business relationships with other departments within the organization
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, excellent time management skills and able to effectively prioritize tasks in a high-volume and evolving work environment
- Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills with an ability to present payroll and commission related concepts to Senior Leadership
