A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT

As a Construction Superintendent, you are responsible for supervising and managing all on-site activities during the construction, renovation, or repair of federal buildings and infrastructure.

This position ensures compliance with government regulations, contract specifications and safety standards. Construction experience working on DoD and USACE projects is desired.

Key Responsibilities :

Project Planning and Coordination :

  • Develop and maintain construction schedules.
  • Coordinate with project managers, architects, engineers and contractors.
  • Ensure that all project phases are completed on time and within budget.

Site Management :

  • Oversee daily operations on the construction site.
  • Ensure adherence to project plans, specifications and quality standards.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to monitor progress and compliance with safety regulations.

Supervision and Leadership :

  • Manage and supervise construction crews and subcontractors.
  • Assign tasks and responsibilities to workers.
  • Provide training and guidance to ensure safety and efficiency.

Compliance and Reporting :

  • Ensure all work complies with federal, state and local building codes and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of construction activities, progress and any issues.
  • Prepare and submit reports to project managers and government agencies as required.

Safety Management :

  • Implement and enforce safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings and inspections.
  • Address and resolve any safety concerns promptly.

Quality Control :

  • Inspect materials, equipment, and workmanship to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Resolve any construction issues or defects in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all work is completed according to the contract specifications and approved designs.

Communication :

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the government and contractors.
  • Facilitate effective communication among all project stakeholders.
  • Handle any disputes or conflicts that arise during the construction process.

Budget Management :

  • Monitor project expenditures to ensure alignment with budget constraints.
  • Approve purchase orders and invoices for materials and services.
  • Identify and address any potential cost overruns.

Other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT

Job Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Must be either a citizen of the U.S. or a non-U.S. citizen who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence as evidenced by a Permanent Resident Card (USCIS I-551).
  • OSHA 30, EM 385-1-1, USACE CQM certification and CPR / 1st Aid certification.
  • Ability to successfully pass and remain in compliance with required background checks from Tribal 1 and any required federal government background checks.
  • Must pass drug screen and remain in compliance with drug free workplace policies.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, stand or sit for long periods of time, access roofs, crawl spaces and all construction areas.

Experience :

  • Successful prior track record as a Superintendent on Federal government projects for a minimum of five (5) years.
  • Experience executing Quality Control Plans that align with Government Quality Assurance Surveillance Plans and Performance Measures.
  • Experience with writing, developing or modifying company and / or site specific safety programs.

Skills :

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, including problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Willingness to complete additional training and / or obtain certifications in order to support contract requirements.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in construction management software.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction processes, materials and legal regulations.
  • Understanding of Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and agency specific regulations, including the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulations (DFAR).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Competent with MS Office products (i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Working Environment :

  • This position requires primarily working on constructions sites, which may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and physical hazards.
  • Travel may be required to various project locations.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet project deadlines.
