Position Summary :
Provide a variety of instructional / learning activities that will train students on how to drive a forklift safely and properly in order to obtain their OSHA Forklift Operator Driving certification.
This training will prepare the student for employment in the Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics field. Students will be trained on several pieces of equipment.
Reporting Relationship :
Direct reporting to the Manager, Workforce and Community Partnerships-Workforce Trades.
Essential Responsibilities :
1. Demonstrate teaching ability at a quality trainer level. Qualified trainer will possess a recognized degree, certificate, or professional standing, or who by knowledge, training and experience, has demonstrated the ability to train and evaluate powered industrial truck operators.
2. Teach classroom portion of Forklift Training program which includes : training videos teaching forklift operation and safety, discussing different principles and terminology presented in the videos, and reviewing material that will be on the written certification exam.
3. Administer 58-question, written certification exam to students during the second session of the program. Grade exams, return to the students and submit grade reporting in a timely manner.
4. Hands-on instruction will include : pre-trip inspection, how to use controls and gauges on the forklift, safe hookup on a charger, driving forward and in reverse, slalom skills, moving and double-stacking freight, simulated loading of a semi-trailer, and working in a 3-tier rack system.
5. Keep track of student attendance and promptness using sign-in sheets.
6. Report any student issues immediately to the Manager of Workforce Development and Community Partnerships-Workforce Trades or Campus Police.
7. Reinforce and the student code of conduct and workplace standards that will be upheld in the classroom.
8. Conduct driving skills test for each student during the last session of the program. Instructor will evaluate the student on driving skill and safety (evaluation forms are provided).
9. Distribute evaluations to students during the last session. They should be collected by an assigned student and mailed back to the Manager, of Transportation, Warehousing and Logistics.
10. Any information about potential employment in the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics field should be given to the students either verbally or with handouts.
11. Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Other Duties and Responsibilities :
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Employee is subject to indoor work and outdoor conditions. The hands-on training area has minimal heat during the winter and can be very warm during the summer.
Appropriate attire is necessary. Employee must be able to get on and off the forklift safely and properly. An electric, sit-down rider forklift is used for training.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods is required.
Minimum Qualifications :
1. High School Diploma and five years of forklift driving experience.
2. Ability to adapt to a student’s needs.
3. Ability to work with a group of students who are at different skill levels.
4. Able to relate classroom training to what is expected in a real, working environment.
5. Be organized and possess good communication skills.
6. Ability to work flexible hours (day time / and or evening availability preferred).
Preferred Qualifications :
1. Associate Degree.
2. Eight years of forklift driving experience, most of which was in a warehouse or shipping dock work environment.
3. Experience teaching in a community college environment.
4. Familiarity with different types of material handling equipment.
