Job Description

Plans, develops, coordinates, and directs engineering projects of varying scope. Carry out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures, where work is expected to result in the development of new or refined equipment, materials, processes, projects and / or scientific methods.

Develop and evaluate plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others. Assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering evaluation tests, products, or equipment when data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.

Often performs in an advisory or consultant role to a technical specialty, equipment, and / or program.

Essential Duties

  • Plans and creates or monitors the design of engineered systems, components, or equipment
  • Coordinates with faculty researchers and / or other engineering personnel to define broad research objectives and ascertain the nature of complex research problems
  • Oversees the analysis or analyzes research problems, requirements, and objectives
  • Organizes and manages the adaptation of engineering principles in the solution of problems for the development of new techniques, instrumentation and / or processes
  • Recommends design modifications or alterations as required
  • Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to maintain optimum utilization of equipment or system
  • Monitors budget, staffing and cost control for each project. May supervise, coordinate or monitor activities of a small staff of engineers and technicians
  • Provides training and oversight of ASU owned equipment, including its sourcing, purchasing, use tracking, and preventative maintenance

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field AND three years of engineering or related experience; OR, seven years of engineering or related experience;

OR, any equivalent combination of experience and / or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Work experience in test engineering, specifically RF test engineering, is strongly desired
  • Demonstrted knowledge in the use of analog and digital circuitry and / or software control systems as well as signal generators, performance network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, noise figure measurements, phase noise measurements, and related equipment
  • Hardware and software integration and troubleshooting experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge with process development and characterization through the usage of Design of Experiments, SPC, and the associated data analysis tools
  • Disposition to interface with lab customers (students, staff, faculty, and external entities) as appropriate
  • Experience in working well in a team and to operate independently when needed
  • Evidence of effective communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Detail oriented, flexible, self-motivated, excellent troubleshooting skills

Working Environment

  • This is a first shift position -, Monday-Friday. Occasional off shift work may be required to manage emergencies within the AEP Core.
  • Regular activities require ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks at one time, manage conflict, work well in a team environment and operate independently, and communicate effectively to exchange accurate information
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and / or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Activities are performed in environmentally controlled office and laboratory settings subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position, walking moderate distances to perform work functions, and operating computer and other office productivity machinery
  • For the class / cleanroom space, it will be necessary to wear personal protective equipment including long pants, closed-toed shoes, shoe covers, a lab coat or cleanroom suit, gloves, and safety glasses
  • Some activities will entail the need for frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to clearly communicate to exchange accurate information to perform essential duties
