General Description
This is a student position responsible for providing sign language interpreting support services for Deaf / Hard of Hearing individuals to provide equal opportunities in higher education to qualified students with disabilities.
Pay rate compensatory on experience. Minimum pay rate : $11.00 / hour Job Duties 1. Provides sign language interpreting services to Deaf / Hard of Hearing individuals primarily in the classroom environment, but occasions to interpret at other events may arise;
work is performed independently under the supervision of Disability Services.
2. Provides assigned disability services to support the mission of the department.
3. Performs work within department and university guidelines, policies, and procedures.
4. Works assigned scheduled to meet department needs.
5. May work at varying locations across campus.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university and departmental policies and procedures.
2. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
3. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
4. Ability to work required schedule in order to provide accommodations.
5. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Required Qualifications The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent required; experience is required, evaluation of interpreting skills by Interpreter Coordinator will be completed;
- must be able to coordinate with the personal and academic schedule of the students with disabilities for whom the services will be provided;
ability to establish effective working relations is required, as are patience and courteousness; must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications 1. Interpreter certification preferred.
2. Interpreter training program experience preferred.
3. Previous interpreting experience is preferred. Physical Demands Special Conditions for Eligibility A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters.
To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
