Postdoctoral Research Associate, Imieliski & Gursoy Labs

New York Genome Center
New York, NY, United States
$18K a year
Full-time

The Imieliski and Gursoy Labs at the New York Genome Center are looking for an energetic and motivated individual to work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate within a highly creative and dynamic research team of scientists, computational biologists, engineers, and life science entrepreneurs.

The successful candidate will be jointly mentored by Drs. Marcin Imieliski and Gamze Gursoy at the intersection of computational biology and cancer genomics and have the opportunity to also be affiliated with the medical schools at New York University and Columbia University.

About the labs

The Imieliski Lab applies cancer genome assembly to study long-range DNA structure in tumors using techniques such as short and long read sequencing, Hi-C, and Pore-C.

A key goal of the lab is to understand how complex somatic DNA rearrangements shape the tumor epigenome and drive cancer progression.

More fundamentally, the lab is interested in using structural variation as a lens to study genomic plasticity and somatic evolution.

The lab is committed to translating clinically relevant basic research findings into genomic diagnostics and incorporating these into precision cancer care.

The Gursoy lab develops tools to analyze and understand large-scale omics data in relation to diseases and phenotypes. A particular interest in the lab is to develop computational and experimental tools to map the regulatory wiring of the chromatin to interrogate the regulatory variation affecting the molecular phenotypes associated with diseases.

They develop novel algorithms to impute and predict long-range chromatin interactions inspired by statistical mechanics, probabilistic methods, and neural networks using data types such as ChIP-seq, DNA methylation, and Hi-C & Pore-C.

About the position

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist to develop computational tools for predicting and understanding genome organization and function in cancer.

This position will be at the intersection of cancer genomics and computational biology, with co-mentorship by both PIs and membership in both labs.

The postdoctoral scientist will lead an exciting project that combines cutting-edge statistical methods, machine learning, biophysical modeling and our understanding of cancer, with an opportunity to test and validate their findings in the wet lab in collaborations with the rest of team and labs at NYGC.

In addition, we envision that the postdoctoral scientist will play a major role in developing new projects in a supportive team science environment.

Required Skills

The candidate will hold a PhD or MD-PhD and have prior research experience in any of the followings : bioinformatics, computational biology and / or genomics and prior peer-reviewed publications.

The candidate will be expected to plan and carry out research tasks independently and write-up / present findings on a regular basis.

Computer scientists or physicists with interest in biology who are looking to improve their computational biology skills are particularly encouraged to apply for this position.
