Minimum Qualifications Candidate must be reachable on the interdepartmental list for Associate Attorney, or be a current New York State employee with one year of permanent competitive or non-competitive 55-bc service as an Associate Attorney or be in a title deemed eligible for transfer under Section 70.
1 or 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. Candidate must be admitted to the New York State Bar.
Duties Description Reporting to the General Counsel (or Deputy Counsel), the Associate Attorney’s job duties include, but are not limited to assisting with all aspects of work assigned to the Office of Counsel, handling high priority assignments from General Counsel and agency executive staff, legislative and regulatory initiatives, and participating in the day-to-day and overall management of the Office of Counsel staff and activities.
The Associate Attorney may also manage litigation arising in both state and federal courts by assisting with all aspects of litigation : reviewing and triaging incoming litigation, handling or assigning cases as appropriate (requesting representation, reviewing the petition / complaint, preparing response papers, affidavits and memoranda of law, conducting legal research, engaging in motion practice, , including very high level and complex litigation matters.
The Associate Attorney may provide supervision, training, and guidance to Office of Counsel staff and may also lead special project teams.
The incumbent may serve as the agency’s Ethics Officer or HIPAA Privacy Officer. The Associate Attorney is expected to demonstrate sound judgment and independent decision making as appropriate for the particular situation and provide high level review and support of the agency’s work.
Travel may be required for this position.
