The Cleveland Museum of Art announces an opening for a Fellow in Chinese Paintings Conservation, made possible through the generous support of June and Simon K.
C. Li. In 2018, CMA established the June and Simon K. C. Li Center for Chinese Painting Conservation, which has become a leader among North American institutions to advance the field of Chinese paintings conservation.
This position begins no earlier than January 2022 and is a full-time, 18-month appointment.
The June and Simon K.C. Li Center Fellow will take part in all aspects of installation and preventive care and conservation activities concerning the CMAs Chinese painting and calligraphy collections.
The Fellow will have the opportunity for in-depth examination and treatment of Chinese paintings ranging in four Chinese traditional formats, such as hanging scrolls, handscrolls, Chinese album leaves, and paneled paintings.
There will be opportunities for research related to the collection and participation and engagement in wider discussions within the field.
The June and Simon K. C. Li Center Fellow will work under supervision of the Associate Conservator of Chinese Paintings, and interact regularly with other conservators, technicians, curators, and registrars.
The fellowship will focus on the study, examination, and treatment of works of art in the CMAs Chinese painting collections.
The successful candidate will gain considerable experience treating works of art in well equipped, production-oriented conservation laboratories.
Conservation involvement in permanent collection exhibitions and special exhibitions will enhance training opportunities.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in informal lectures, symposia, and workshops, and to visit and collaborate with other cultural institutions.
The hours for this fellowship are 35 hours per week, 9 : 00 am -5 : 00 p.m. Monday Friday.
Requirements :
Candidates will be considered who have graduated from a recognized conservation training program with a specialization in Asian paintings conservation.
Graduates from other recognized training or apprenticeship programs or candidates with equivalent training will also be considered.
- Application materials must be received by October 31, 2021. For consideration, please submit the following materials in English :
- A curriculum vitae including basic biographical information, current and permanent addresses and telephone numbers, education, and experience in English.
- A letter stating your interests and intent in applying for the fellowship including description(s) of previous conservation experience and internships in Chinese or English (English is preferred).
- The names and contact information for three conservation professionals references familiar with your work.
- A letter of recommendation sent by email to [email protected] written either in English or Chinese from one of the three professional references.
- At least three samples of examination reports and treatment records with photographs written in Chinese or English (English is preferred).
- A proven record of research and writing ability, as well as English-language skills, are preferred.
Only those selected for interviews will be contacted. After a preliminary selection, final candidates may be invited for a site interview or virtual interview.
If the interview is virtual, then the candidate should give a 20-minute PowerPoint presentation during their interview. If the interview is onsite, then a physical portfolio of conservation treatments and research should be presented by the candidate.
About the Museum
The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is one of the worlds foremost art museums, having outstanding collections of Pre-Columbian, medieval European, and Asian art.
The Museums mission is to create transformative experiences through art, for the benefit of all the people forever. The CMA opened to the public in 1916 and the conservation department was established in 1958.
The Museum's conservation department employs 12 full-time staff members, including conservators in paper, Asian paintings, textiles, western paintings, and objects, as well as technicians, and a chief conservator.
At any given time, the department also hosts numerous pre-program conservation interns, graduate interns, fellows, and volunteers.

- The fellowship is a full-time position with an 18-month appointment beginning no earlier that January 2022.
- The fellowship includes a $37,000 annual stipend, paid bi-weekly
- A travel allowance for study / research will be reserved for the Fellow using the Departments professional development fund and at the discretion of the supervisor and the Chief Conservator.
- The Museum will support and pay for a visa application if the successful applicant is not able to legally work in the United States.
