Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities.
Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice.
Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children's health, rural health, and health equity.
HPDP is part of a network of 26 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy.
UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
This Behavioral Health Intervention Counselor position (Permanent Time Limited- 3 years) will work with the Community Health and Wellness Research (CHWR) team on the Resilience project (NIH R01 funded study).
This project will evaluate the potential of a remotely delivered workplace resilience intervention to improve the psychosocial health and well-being of Early Childhood Education (ECE) staff.
The Behavioral Health Intervention Counselor will contribute to intervention content creation, be trained on and lead the Stress Management And Resilience Training (SMART) intervention arm and assist with the physical activity control arm with child care directors and staff.
Additionally, the position will assist, when able, with remote recruitment and online data collection of child care directors and staff.
This project will be hybrid, with working some hours at the office and some remotely.
Specifically, the Behavioral Health Intervention Counselor will :
- Assist in creating intervention protocols, content messaging, tailoring the intervention to the child care provider population, and process evaluations procedures.
- Be trained in and lead the SMART intervention with child care directors and staff. This intervention will include a remotely delivered orientation to child care staff, coaching calls with directors, live webinars with child care staff, and weekly messaging.
The position will be in charge of creating and maintaining an intervention tracking database.
- Assist with the physical activity control arm intervention.
- Monitor the study email, the admin portal from the SMART website, program text messaging and feedback and respond and document progress accordingly.
- Perform study protocols for and assist with remote recruitment and online data collection of child care centers and staff.
- Contribute to the preparation of NIH, Clinical Trials, and Data Safety Monitoring reports and IRB modifications and renewals.
- Occasional weekend or evening hours will be required to accommodate ECE staff schedules
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Degree in Public Health, psychology, counseling, human services, nursing, social work, other related field, or a combination of training and experience in a related field.
- Experience communicating with clients or participants remotely (e.g., webinars, telehealth).
- Experience in and knowledge of early childhood education settings.
- Experience with counseling or motivational interviewing.
- Experience working with diverse populations with varied education levels and digital literacy
- Experience working in in psychological, social, behavioral health, or health related field.
