Job Description

The Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (Trust Lands Administration) seeks an Assistant Managing Director to oversee the agency's Richfield office.

This position will report to the Managing Director of the Surface Resources business group.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Managing Director include :

  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the agency's Richfield Office
  • Supervise the agency's rangeland resource program managers and office staff
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with local government officials, state legislators, federal and state agencies, and other stakeholders within the southwest region
  • Assist agency management with strategic planning and internal policy development
  • Represent the agency in public meetings, local planning efforts, various committees, interagency work groups, and other similar capacities
  • Monitor and review project and policy proposals that may affect the agency
  • Serve as a liaison between the agency and outside entities to address concerns, provide input, and represent the interests of the Trust beneficiaries
  • Oversee the agency's surface land sale program for the southwestern region of the state
  • Monitor market conditions and trends, evaluate opportunities to increase the value of trust assets, and identify properties suitable for sale
  • Assist with marketing efforts to generate competitive interest, complete various administrative processes to prepare properties for sale, and negotiate sales transactions with prospective purchasers
  • Administer special use leases including negotiating lease agreements, conducting periodic lease reviews and site inspections, monitoring payments, and ensuring lease compliance
  • Coordinate with other agency team members on land management issues. Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team to advance the mission of the Trust.
  • Coordinate land stewardship efforts to maintain, repair, protect, and enhance the value of the Trust's assets. Identify opportunities for stewardship projects and coordinate project planning, equipment needs, supplies, contracting, in-house assistance, and volunteer needs to carry out projects
  • Manage recreational activities on trust lands within the southwest region, including issuing right-of-entry permits and working with recreational user groups, other land management agencies, and members of the public to educate them about the Trust's mission and to plan appropriate uses.

This position is based out of the Trust Land Administration's Richfield office. Although remote work may be permitted on occasion, this is primarily an in-office position.

The position requires a variable amount of in-state travel and field work.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in land / real estate / natural resource management professional
  • Personnel management and team leadership experience
  • Experience working collaboratively with local government officials, state legislators, federal / state agencies, and related stakeholders
  • Knowledge and experience with real estate and related transactions
  • Knowledge and experience related to range management
  • Knowledge and experience related to Utah water rights
  • Experience with contract negotiations
  • Understanding of the public land survey system (PLSS) and metes & bounds legal descriptions
  • Ability to perform field work, including inspections of remote locations by 4x4, ATV / UTV, or hiking

Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a business, natural resources, or related field
  • Enthusiastic support of the Trust Lands Administration's mission to generate revenue for the Trust beneficiaries
  • Experience working effectively in teams to establish and maintain cross-functional and positive working relationships
  • Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
