The Senior Associate Director of Foundations, Corporations, and Government Relations is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for marketing new and existing programs of The Carter Center.

Manages fundraising, agreement negotiation, and grants management for a portfolio of domestic and international projects focused on democracy and governance, human rights, conflict mitigation, and the rule of law, with a focus on government (foreign and U.

S.), foundations, international / multilateral organizations, and corporate donors, as well as providing support in approaches to individuals.

Reports to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), (Peace or Health) Programs. Working with the CDO, other development staff, program teams, and other staff across the Center, the Senior Associate Director develops and implements fundraising and stewardship strategies, including writing, editing, and ensuring the timely submission of compelling proposals and complex narrative and financial reports.

Responsible for making and responding to donor inquiries, cultivating strategic partnerships, and stewarding donor relationships.

Domestic and international travel is required. Due to the travel locations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION :

Program Management : Collaborates with programs to develop new initiatives, ascertain funding needs, explore funding sources, and secure funding primarily from governments, foundations, international / multilateral organizations, corporations, and individuals.

Assumes responsibility for achieving specific goals and objectives of selected programs and projects, including existing program commitments and strategic growth initiatives.

Maintains a thorough working knowledge of programs and, with the SAD-L and Director, devises appropriate fundraising strategies, tracks the success of these strategies, and prepares alternative approaches as necessary to meet fundraising goals.

Drafts donor correspondence and proposals in support of the Center's Programs.

Research & Strategy Development : Works with SAD-Lead and Director to implement the Program Development Department's strategy.

Researches and identifies donor prospects and recommends realistic strategies for solicitations. Gathers up-to-date information on selected donors and prospects in collaboration with the Center’s research staff and Program Development interns.

Donor Liaison & Representation : Manages the cultivation and stewardship processes for program donors, including the timely preparation of proposals, acknowledgment letters, narrative / financial progress reports, and other correspondence.

Maintains regular contact with Carter Center staff to ensure effective and timely communication of relevant information and submission of deliverables to donors.

Budget Management : Works with the finance and program staff to develop and monitor budgets for project proposals. Monitors narrative and financial reporting requirements in collaboration with program and finance staff and coordinates preparation of reports for timely submission to donors.

Stays abreast of donor requirements and requests and collects / organizes data to ensure accurate and complete narrative and financial reports.

Communications : Writes and / or edits proposals, reports, acknowledgment letters, general correspondence, and collateral materials.

Works with the Center's Communications staff to draft articles and donor recognition materials or provide content for various print and online publications.

Meeting, Events & Conferences : Participates in the planning process for Carter Center events. Associated responsibilities include preparing invitations, requests, and briefing materials;

coordinating meeting arrangements with event planning staff; and post-meeting follow-up and acknowledgments. Also, will be expected to attend Carter Center events, such as regular Board of Councilors meetings, Conversations, the annual Peace Program Review, and the annual Executive Briefing.

Information Management : Responsible for maintaining donor information and actions in Raiser's Edge database, a web-based Grants Library, and the award management module of the Center’s financial system.

Supervision : May supervise, orient, and train department interns.

Policies & Procedures : Coordinates with Carter Center compliance staff to ensure awards are managed in compliance with donor requirements.

Ensures compliance with all organizational policies and procedures. Coordinates efficient office procedures in support of program activities.

Professional Development : Maintains professional growth and development of self by identifying educational / training programs, professional organizations, activities and resources to maintain knowledge of national trends and to promote leading-edge expertise.

Travel : Organizes and conducts donor cultivation and solicitation meetings / trips individually and with program staff (e.

g., election assessment trips). Organizes similar meetings / trips for the Chief Development Officers, Executive Leadership (Board members, CEO, Vice Presidents), and / or staff members of the Programs.

Prepares briefing materials for these meetings / trips. Prepares trip reports and works to ensure comprehensive follow-up at the conclusion of donor meetings.

Performs related responsibilities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

A bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience in international development, non-profit management, business development, or related experience in a non-profit or higher education institution, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Significant experience in fundraising and grants management for international programs is desired, as is international development program experience.
  • Experience working with U.S. and other government donors, multilateral agencies, private foundations, and donors headquartered in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East is preferred.
  • Proficiency in a second language, particularly Spanish, French, or Arabic, would be beneficial.
  • Significant experience in grant writing and donor relations.
  • The ability to draft and edit complex proposals and narrative reports.
  • A solid understanding of program budget development and financial reporting, as well as experience collaborating with programs and finance teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively as well as independently with minimum supervision.
  • The ability to develop consensus among diverse internal and external constituents.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to learn Raiser's Edge.
