The After School Special Needs Assistant assists the Head Teacher and / or Teacher as necessary in support of assigned students in the After-School program.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following :
- Assists the teacher with daily tasks;
- Instructs students in preplanned activities as required;
- Assists with any activity and special event as needed;
- Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with EDEP staff and school staff;
- Exhibits positive public relations;
- Upholds school rules, policies, and procedures;
- Provides basic personal care;
- Provides care for assigned special needs student(s) in ALL EDEP venues (Student Holiday, Spring Break and Inclement Weather programs)
- Participates in EDEP programs (Student Holiday, Spring Break and Inclement Weather programs) as assigned;
- Attends required and assigned training sessions;
- Exhibits dependable work habits;
- Maintains a safe work environment;
- Establishes and maintains high standards of behavior;
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Offers of employment will be to work with the Extended Day Enrichment Program (EDEP).
QUALIFICATIONS : Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school including basic keyboard and filing training.
Experience working with special needs children preferred; Certified in First Aid; Prefer some nursing assistant / attendant experience and age appropriate experience.
Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students; willing to learn specialized instructional / management techniques employed with disabled students;
ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff; must be high school graduate or hold equivalence of a high school diploma and be willing to seek and maintain CPR certification.
- PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS : Duties performed typically in school settings to include the cafeteria, gym, recreational areas and other assigned spaces;
- Frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 80 pounds, and other limited physical activities are required; Occasional travel with students on field trips;
- Regular movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required; Personal hygiene of disabled students in changing catheters, diapers, and clothing is required;
- Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required; Daily personal and close contact with children and ASEP staff members required to provide an effective learning environment;
contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy; contact with children requires considerable empathy and understanding of children with disabilities.
