Experienced RN - Registered Nurse - (NIGHTS) ED Adult Border Unit / ED Clinical Evaluation Unit - Duke University Hospital - Durham, NC

As of 10 / 1 / 23 - Experienced RNs with 1+ years of experience are eligible to receive a $15,000 DUHS Commitment bonus for the Emergency Department Adult Boarder Unit / ED Clinical Evaluation Unit (or former Duke employees coming back after 1 year into the Duke Health System).

Department Profile :

As our health system and others are challenged with unprecedented capacity and throughput it is imperative that we implement creative initiatives that support our patients requiring care.

The Emergency Department Adult Border Unit (EDABU) and the Emergency Department Clinical Evaluation Unit (CEU) consist of a combination of 32 beds that care for intermingling levels of care, excluding pediatrics and ICU level, with our collective goal being to decompress the emergency department.

This care team consisting of RNs and ED Techs will care for patients that have been admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Department and are awaiting an inpatient bed assignment.

Additionally, this care team of exemplary and diverse people will care for a population of emergency department observation patients, with a stay of 24 hours-or-less, by following a variety of standard protocols in collaboration with an ED provider.

Primary RN responsibilities include; providing nursing care, in accordance with the NCBON practice act, that is inclusive of the comfort of our patients and their families, facilitating treatment and acting as an advocate for the patient, consulting with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, participating in our journey to zero harm initiatives, must be a team player and other duties as assigned.

Job Summary :

As a Registered Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities.

Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the care goals and health outcomes of the patient and care team.

Plan and provide advanced and / or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned.

Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Work Hours & Shifts :

  • No rotating shifts, unless you prefer it
  • Full Time : 3 - 12-hour shifts - Night shift 7p - 7a
  • Part Time : as negotiated with manager, must commit to two - twelve hour shifts per pay period (every 2 weeks)
  • The unit has a waiting list for those wishing to move shifts (must work original shift for at least 6 months)

Knowledge, Skills, Education, Abilities :

  • Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and NCA
  • Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
  • Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedure
  • Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families
  • Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others
  • Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care
  • Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up
  • Ability to use fine motor skills
  • Competent in BLS and / or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area or organization
  • Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
  • Ability to use computer and learn new software programs
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and / or paper documentation tools
  • Ability to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients
  • Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking
  • Ability to remain focused and organized
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients
  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions
  • Working knowledge and completion of appropriate JCAHO and other regulatory requirements
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required
  • All Registered Nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Preferred :

1 or more years of RN experience in an emergency department or inpatient setting with mixed acuity.

Licensure, Certification or Registration :

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification preferred (required within 3 months of employment)
