Position description

Kerlikowske Lab - Assistant / Associate Specialist

The San Francisco Mammography Registry (SFMR) is seeking a person for the specialist-series with experience in computational imaging, machine learning, MATLAB, SQL, and the Linux and Unix programming environments.

The incumbent will work with the SFMR image database that includes over 600,000 digital and over 100,000 tomosynthesis breast images that are collected prospectively and stored retrospectively.

The registry provides an unparalleled resource for breast cancer research, enabling cutting edge work in breast cancer risk assessment with novel measures of breast imaging.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Image Research Engineer to join our team within the UCSF Department of Medicine. In this role, you will manage the imaging database, support anonymization and secure transfers, and perform image analysis with state of the art artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

The position involves :

Monitor acquisition of image database collection and storage needs

  • Responsible for managing SQL image database.
  • Run MATLAB analysis software scripts to process the imaging data.
  • Monitor daily incoming digital and tomosynthesis images from four facilities each with multiple mammography machines.
  • Monitor and allocate disc space for image database as needed to accommodate incoming images.

Deidentify images for case / control studies and send to collaborators.

  • Deidentify images, add study ID to images, perform secure image transfers to collaborators at University of Washington, University of Hawaii and University of Pennsylvania
  • Ensure data security.
  • Create reports on monthly image transfers in SAS.

Quanitative Image Analysis

  • Measure Volpara density on images for case / control studies
  • Measure Transpara AI program on images for case / control studies
  • Provide density / AI measures to SFMR programmers for linkage to mammography results, risk factor, and cancer data.

New techniques and protocols will be initiated when required for the execution of the research project. This position requires the ability to work independently and in cooperation with collaborators and problem solve as needed.

Required qualifications :

  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess either a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) with 3+ years of research experience or a master's degree (or equivalent degree).
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Strong Computer Skills (MATLAB, SQL, Python, SAS, and the Linux and Unix programming environments)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Careful attention to detail.

Preferred qualifications :

  • Prior training in computer science, quantitative image analysis, and bioinformatics and / or machine learning.
  • Experience in breast mammography imaging or breast cancer research highly desired

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities.

Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.
