Job Summary :
The Peri-Operative Nurse Consultant is accountable to the Nursing Director for coordinating and integrating educational, consultative, evidence-based practice, and research functions into ongoing nursing practice.
Essential Responsibilities :
Improves clinical practice through implementation of AORN standards, evidence-based practice, systems assessment and, consultation.
Assures that employees providing service have the knowledge and skills required to provide age and culturally appropriate care to patients and families through education, training, and experience.
Monitors and evaluates the quality and effectiveness of care delivered to patients during intra-operative phase of surgery.
Provides leadership in strategic planning to achieve departmental and clinical specialty goals and objectives. Collaborates with Operating Room Nurse Managers and healthcare team to ensure the regulatory compliance standards are met.
Develops curriculum for education plan to include yearly competencies and orientation. Consults with and assists management in the development of measures for quality and performance.
Maintains autonomy of practice through self-evaluation, continuing education, peer reviewing, and the pursuit of scholarly activities.
Provides oversight, mentoring and administrative presence for Surgical Services RN education staff. Assists staff with teaching plans, problem solving, and coaching.
Identifies and follows up with staff education issues. Develops performance standards and measurements for systematic review.
Audits performance to ensure regulatory compliance. Works with management to improve and develop work flows which support efficiencies and improve service delivery.
Motivates, educates and coaches staff as needed and acknowledges positive staff behavior. Clearly communicates expectations and agreements for staff.
Provides input intoyearly performance evaluations. Provides feedback and information to the Surgical Services Director on performance management / corrective action issues.
Basic Qualifications :
Experience
- Minimum three (3) years clinical experience within the last 7 years.
- Minimum two (2) years leadership / education / management experience.
Education
Bachelors degree in nursing or related field.
License, Certification, Registration
- Registered Nurse License (in the state where care is provided)
- Basic Life Support

Preferred Qualifications :
- Minimum one (1) year previous experience leading a Surgical Services Education Team.
- Minimum one (1) year management experience.
- Minimum five (5) years education experience.
- Minimum five (5) years clinical experience in specialty.
- Prior experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Masters degree in nursing or related field.
