Summary
Assists the nurse(s) by carrying out tasks not requiring licensure; enhances patient flow through the medical office by delivering quality care and support under the health care professional’s directions.
Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs administrative duties e.g., greeting patients, answering telephones and relaying patient requests and questions to the appropriate health care provider, patient reminders and follow-up (no shows), maintaining and filing of medical records, form completion and / or handling correspondence, managing medical supply and inventory, maintaining and calibration of medical equipment, etc.
Enters data into computer applications e.g. electronic medical record (OHM, e-prescribing and clinical labs). Additional administrative responsibilities include clerical duties, such as completing accurate encounter logs, provider payment validation and reconciliation.
Updates medical records and verifies medical histories; takes vital signs, etc. Prepares and sets up examination room for treatment / examination by health care providers and assists when necessary.
If applicable, transcribe dictated documents, receive, and communicate laboratory results (no interpretation) and reiterate provider instructions and patient health teachings.
Schedules and follows up on test results, procedures, and referrals to ensure appropriate health care.
Performs clinical duties, e.g. applies medical treatments, including but not limited to splints, wraps, dressing changes and other patient care techniques as assigned in an effective manner and in accordance with the provider treatment plan, standing orders and protocols, etc.
Assists with therapeutic and simple surgical procedures. Performs blood pressure and blood sugar checks. May perform phlebotomy and basic laboratory collection and testing (blood, urine) as assigned, to include receiving laboratory results and communicating test results to physicians and patients.
Under the direction of the appropriate healthcare provider, administers immunizations / vaccinations. Prepares and administers medications as directed by physician or mid-level provider.
State specific restrictions may apply. Administers intramuscular injections as prescribed by the physician (this duty can only be performed after the incumbent has demonstrated competency by an RN or physician).
With appropriate certifications, may respond to medical emergencies, administer CPR and basic first aid.
Assists staff with systems for health improvement of patients at the facility, by taking vitals, body measurements, specimen collection and explaining preventative measures that can assist in improving patient health i.e. support with HIP.
Minimum Education
High School diploma or equivalent and Certified Medical Assistant certification.
Experience Requirements
At least 1- 2 years experience. Certificate for completion of course for Certified Medical Assistant. Phlebotomy certification is required.
All healthcare staff must adhere to the company immunization policy and provide proof of training, certifications, and / or licenses.
Experience Preferred
Computer experience. Two or more years’ experience a plus. Bilingual a plus.
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
- Position is mostly sedentary but may require occasional moving to other offices or buildings.
- May need to move light equipment or supplies from one place to another.
- May need to access files, supplies and equipment.
- Work activity is generally in an office, clinical environment.
- Must be able to see, touch, smell & record findings in writing or electronically.
- Have the ability to respond as needed to medical emergencies in all areas of the complex.
- Majority of work in office or clinic setting, as well as inter-facility & external environmental conditions (e.g., noise levels, changes in temperature, humidity, etc.
- Must have the ability to move throughout the processing plant & surrounding environments of the off-site facilities, such as feed mills, hatcheries, etc.
- Must wear PPE as required.
- When in a plant environment : Exposure primarily consists of wet and moist floors, including metal and plastic grating surfaces.
May be exposed to temperatures of 28 degrees to degrees Fahrenheit with both ambient and % humidity. May handle product 25 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
May be exposed to noise ranges of 50 dB to dB. May be exposed to all chemicals used in poultry, food, processing facility.
Must wear and use protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed
