Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The hospital is comprised of 545 beds and is a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station and a 911 Receiving Hospital.

Job Description
This class of positions encompasses the scopes of practice of clinical laboratory technologists and, where appropriate, cytotechnologists and histotechnologists, in accordance with Article 165 of the New York State Education Law and Title 10 of the New York State Public Health Law.
Additionally, performs clinical laboratory work that varies in degree of difficulty and / or supervises a major program initiative or activity.
There are six (6) Assignment Levels within this class of positions; all personnel perform related work, as appropriate to area(s) of assignment and licensure.
Assignment Level III
Under direction, with very broad latitude for independent judgment and decision making, supervises, trains, assigns work to, and evaluates work performance of personnel in a small laboratory or laboratory sub-unit performing routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and analyses.
In addition to performing the typical tasks of lower Assignment Levels at a higher level, also performs the following :
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Maintains a program of quality control and participates in a program of quality assurance.
2. Advises staff on appropriate methods and techniques.
3. Oversees the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment as well as the preparation, packaging, labeling, and standardization of laboratory media and reagents;
and records results and pertinent data of prepared products or oversees this function.
4. Prepares labels, packages, and standardizes laboratory media, reagents, controls and specimens for use in analyses.
5. Prepares work orders for laboratory repairs.
6. Assists in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.
7. Conducts tests and / or other complex analyses.
8. Designs and maintains charts, logs, and other records.
9. Testifies in court or other proceedings as an expert witness.
10. May prepare correspondence and narrative / statistical reports.
11. May participate in or supervise the preparation, administration, and rating of laboratory proficiency test programs.
Minimum Qualifications
For Appointment to Level I
1. Valid clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist limited or provisional permit issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
For Appointment to Level II
1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
For Appointment to Level III
In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, appointment to Level III requires : 1. One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank.
