Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness : Fitness Center / Personal Training / Group Exercise is responsible for the comprehensive management, administration and supervision of the fitness programs within the Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness.
This position will be directly responsible for implementation of the personal training, group exercise, and fitness initiatives for the campus community.
It may also assist in the day-to-day operations and will work with the Senior Associate Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness with developing, improving, and / or growing the overall fitness area into a premier program.
Job Duties and Responsibilities · Is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, supervising, providing guidance, student development, and support to over 45+ student employees consisting of fitness supervisors, floor staff, fitness assessors, group exercise instructors and personal trainers.
- Serves as an advocate for health and fitness within higher education and its support of student development and continual education.
- Is responsible in promoting, creating, implementing, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of fitness programs and services.
- This position helps to coordinate and implement fitness programs and services that satisfy the needs and interests of a diverse campus community as determined by ongoing needs assessments.
- Maintains accurate program participant records, as well as, maintaining fitness equipment in regards to cleaning, tracking usage patterns, and staying abreast of current trends in both fitness equipment and fitness programming.
- Contributes to a positive, friendly work environment that encourages, enhances and demonstrates collaboration, teamwork and professionalism among staff, students, and patrons on a daily basis.
- Will be responsible for the comprehensive management, administration, and supervision of the fitness programs within the Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness.
- Work within a structured program designed to provide quality experiences for all participants.· Manages assigned special events and handles various administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of state, federal, and campus rules, regulations, and requirements related to Campus Recreation and Wellness programs.
Ability to coordinate the activities of Campus Recreation and Wellness programs. Ability to evaluate collected information and formulate into recommendations.
Ability to compile information into report form.

- Demonstrate effective follow-up. Required Education and / or Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Administration or related field
- A motivated individual with the energy level and work ethic to continually develop a contemporary fitness program, as well as, awareness of equipment which will be needed to successfully deliver these programs
- Knowledge of fitness components as they relate to the development of a wellness lifestyle concept
- Familiarity with fitness assessment of facilities related to fitness and wellness programming
- Knowledge of standard practices in fitness and wellness facilities
- Minimum two years’ experience working in a campus recreation or fitness environment (graduate assistant experience is acceptable)
- Current First Aid / CPR / AED certifications or ability to become certified within 90 days of employment
- Must be a self-starter with strong and effective oral, written, and computer skills
- Good management and organizational skills with a commitment to student development is necessary
- The ability to work independently in the accomplishment of established goals and objectives will ensure the success of this position.

- Group Exercise Program experience auditioning, and evaluating instructors, management and scheduling of classes · Successful completion of background check prior to employment · The successful candidate will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, engage in evidence-based decision-making, and promote learning Preferred Education and / or Experience Master’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Administration or related field.
- Two years of full-time recognized experience at the collegiate level in administration and supervision of fitness programs
- Current Personal Training certification(s) from a nationally accredited certifying board. (Prefer certifications from ACSM, ACE, AFAA / NASM, CSCS and / or NSCA)
- Prior experience in staff development and management, as well as, leading groups in project management
- Experience with management and personnel software such as, but not limited to Fitness Management Software, Fusion, Sub-it Up, Blackboard, and Banner
- Experience in training; developing / delivering presentation content / materials; writing reports, proposals, professional correspondence, manuals, etc.
- Certified Instructor for First Aid, CPR, AED, and Blood borne Pathogen training

- Knowledge and experience in budget planning and fiscal management
- An understanding of student development theory and demonstrated success in implementing recreation programs to a culturally diverse population
- Minimum 1 year experience developing and managing a comprehensive Group Exercise Program, knowledge / experience in a variety of group fitness styles including Yoga, Meditation, Pilates, Zumba, HITT, Hip Hop, Barre, Boot Camp, Kick Boxing, Martial Arts, etc.
- Nationally Accredited Group Fitness Certification.
