The Research Assistant III will support Dr. Alan Saghatelian 's laboratory in studying microproteins and their biological functions.

This experienced bench scientist will utilize cell and molecular biology techniques to identify, characterize, and study the function of novel peptides in various biological models.

Responsibilities will also include laboratory management tasks such as ordering supplies, organizing materials, maintaining equipment, and working with technicians, students, and postdoctoral fellows in relevant techniques

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

RESEARCH SUPPORT :

The candidate will use various molecular biology techniques, including designing DNA primers for PCR, ordering DNA constructs and plasmids, and confirming their fidelity using restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis.

The candidate should know Gateway and Gibson cloning methods and software such as SnapGene.

Responsible for routinely growing cells in culture, transfecting cells with plasmids to express proteins of interest, and establishing stable cell lines.

Studies may require measuring cell secretion products using commercial ELISAs.

  • To determine the structural requirements of microproteins for binding and activation, use cell surface receptor signaling assays (time-resolved fluorescence and luciferase reporter).
  • Review relevant literature to solve problems and modify and adapt techniques to implement new protocols for lab studies.
  • Use plate-based fluorescent and luminescent activity assays for in-vitro pharmacology of various targets.
  • Develop and execute experiments involving PCR, sequencing, and other DNA-based techniques.
  • Prepare cells and tissues for RNAseq and Riboseq analysis and maintain the workflow for submission to Institute core facilities for sequencing.
  • Assist post-doctoral fellows and provide technical expertise, including carrying out CRISPR screens and cell selection or FACS.
  • Preparation of lentivirus for gene delivery in vitro and in vivo.

LABORATORY MANAGEMENT :

  • Manage the ordering of reagents and supplies for lab projects using purchasing software.
  • Manage freezer inventory and databases of plasmids and reagents in the lab in electronic format.
  • Oversee general lab maintenance and safety. Inform new personnel of required safety procedures and ensures safety updates are disseminated to laboratory personnel.
  • With assistance from postdoctoral fellows, train and oversee junior technicians and undergraduate students in molecular and cell biology techniques.
  • Communicate and interact with Salk departments (HR, accounting, environmental health, materials transfer) and external vendors to conduct necessary lab business such as equipment repair.

DATA ANALYSIS AND REPORTING :

  • Analyze data, prepare graphics using standard programs and present in group meetings.
  • Ensure quality and integrity of data collected and maintain data in electronic form.
  • Assist PIs and postdocs with grant and report writing and study-related publications.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Minimum 4 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related scientific discipline required. A minimum of 6 years of experience in a scientific role is required for consideration of a Bachelor's degree in a different discipline.
  • Computer skills required : Microsoft Office

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

What We Can Offer

The expected pay range for this position is $56,000 to $72,750 annually. Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
