Summary
The Animal and Collections Safety Technician provides ongoing safety and monitoring of all living and non-living collections and areas within the California Science Center.
Duties may include performing security patrols by foot; monitoring, recording, and maintaining cameras and security systems;
responding to and reporting emergencies as defined in procedures; maintaining daily logs; documenting and reporting of incidents, and assisting with events and guest interactions.
GOOD CANDIDATES HAVE :
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Must exercise good judgement; have a high level of integrity; be tactful and courteous in dealing with visitors, staff, and vendors with a positive attitude.
Must speak and articulate clearly for radio and personal communication.
Must be able to hear communications accurately over the radio and in person.
Able to see with clarity up to 75 feet.
Needs to have both sufficient mobility and strength to patrol assigned areas for up to 6 hours of walking, standing, and climbing stairs, and ability to sit in one place for up to 6 hours at a time and maintain concentration on CCTV video screens.
Ability to lift, pull, shift, push 50 pounds, work outside in varying weather conditions , work in wet / dirty locations.
Commitment to work a set schedule but be flexible to help with coverage when necessary. This team operates 24 / 7 and 365 days a year;
so, this includes the ability to work weekends and holidays.
Must maintain a reliable form of contact (, cell phone or home phone) as well as reliable transportation to and from the California Science Center.
Strong writing skills, effective oral communication and problem-solving skills are essential.
Computer proficiency in Word and Excel required.
Must be highly organized with great attention to detail.
Ability to work in both a team setting and independently with minimal supervision.
GREAT CANDIDATES ALSO HAVE :
A minimum of one year of experience in a security field.
Experience operating and maintaining security camera systems.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs and documents regular inspections of all Living Collections areas, which includes documenting the conditions, environmental temperatures, physical barriers, pump status, etc via Smartsheets.
Assists with securing the California Science Center facilities at the end of the day (night shifts) and with the reopening in the morning (day shifts).
Monitors and operates CCTV cameras and in-house security and Life Support System alarms.
Reports all incidents, safety concerns, damages, and other out-of-normal conditions to designated responders; completes Incident Reports and submits them;
maintains ongoing logs of all alarms.
Responds to alarms per established guidelines and policies.
May assist on-site or off-site staff in diagnosing facilities problems by checking equipment for operational issues.
Assists staff in responding to emergencies, including those involving animals in the Living Collections areas. May assist with the handling of live animals and power equipment.
Assists with special in-house events as needed to ensure the safety of all collections as well as guests.
Maintains a high level of customer service and professionalism to all staff, guests, and vendors.
Maintains a high degree of collaboration and cooperation with colleagues within the Living Collections Department.
Adheres to all California Science Center Foundation policies and regulations as stated within the California Science Center Foundation Employee Handbook.
Adheres to all ACST Team and Living Collections departmental policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as required.
