Job Summary :
Primary responsibilities include planning, organizing, and directing the overall operations of the Laboratory Department.
Activities included are the performance of chemical, microscopic and microscopic and bacteriologic tests performed in
the laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Ensure that services are of the best quality,
are cost-contained, and are carried out expeditiously. Additional responsibilities include recognizing results or problems
that require referral to the Pathologist, assuring the competency of all personnel, formulating the budget for the
department, maintaining performance improvement activities within the department and participating in CQI activities,
and maintaining efficient and effective departmental operations in compliance with all state, federal, and local regulatory
laws, standards, and protocols.
Responsibilities
- Provides coaching and education for staff so that they can meet / exceed performance expectations
- Designs and implements individual and group plans that develop and motivate employees
- Make daily rounds in the Laboratory to judge the effectiveness of operation utilization of personnel and supplies and general ethical and professional atmosphere
- Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment, and supplies that are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment
- Communicate administrative directives to department personnel
- Promote effective intradepartmental relationships
- Ensures that employee skills match job requirements. Coordinate the department’s in-service training
- Completes all employee performance evaluations by evaluation due dates.
- Initiate, interpret, and enforce Laboratory Services procedures and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures
- Oversees daily operations to meet the vision of providing service to the community
- Improves patient and / or customer satisfaction.
- Initiate and actuate improved methods of services and direct their implementation.
- Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses, and capital equipment. Responsible for fiscal operations of the department.
- Responds to customer requests and concerns in a timely and effective manner
- Establish and maintain standards of performance and ensure competency and appropriate licensure of personnel
- Direct and participate in the human resource management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation, and performance evaluation processes
- Interact professionally with patients / family
- Utilizes customer satisfaction data to develop and anticipate customer service systems.
- Meets / exceeds customer expectations so that the customers select and recommend Heywood Hospital as their primary source of healthcare.
- Staffing patterns and workflow design match customer requirements.
- Manage resources to ensure adequate resources and future growth
- Work with hospital administration on planning, organizing, and directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
- Justifies budget variances
- Communicate appropriately and clearly to providers, staff, and administration
- Reduces costs and / or increases revenues
- Collaborates and coordinates projects / activities with other departments, teams, and task forces to build a team approach to healthcare delivery.
- Participates in task forces, PI teams, committees, etc.
- Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities
- Leads task forces, PI teams, committees, etc.
- Oversees computer systems for laboratory modules.
- Ensures the computer modules are updated for the laboratory modules.
- Assures the computer downtime systems are set up and staff are trained to follow these policies and procedures
- Updates department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Assures the laboratory meets all regulatory requirements . CLIA, FDA, JCAHO, DPH regulations.
- Assures staff is trained in policies and procedures to maintain compliance.
- Provides quality service for patients, physicians, and other health care providers.
- Ensures quality outcomes for customer satisfaction.
- Continuously works to improve customer service.
- Assures the laboratory contracts are reviewed and the lab service needs are being met
- Ensures lab contracts are reviewed yearly
- Reviews the nursing home contracts and is a liaison for the hospital.
- Assures the quality of laboratory testing.
- Maintains currency in laboratory testing procedures to ensure quality standards are updated / maintained.
- Assures the staff meets the clinical / technical objectives set by licensing requirements where appropriate
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols
- Process Payroll and any other reimbursement-related needs. Maintains adequate staffing for the needs of the Program
- Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes to maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors. Attends trainings
- Provides coverage when needed at other locations within Heywood Healthcare
- Completes all Annual Mandatory Education requirements and any other required mandatory education (. malpractice)
- Participates in meeting Quality measures, tracking and reporting
- All other duties and locations as assigned
Qualifications
Qualifications :
- Registered Medical Technologist (ASCP or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA).
- Master's Degree preferred or Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Physical or Biological Science
- Six years of relevant, full-time experience covering all supervised areas of the Lab.
