Primary responsibilities are to act as first or second assistant under the supervision of Cardiothoracic Surgeon. The PA / First Assist is responsible for endovascular vein harvesting.
The program specializes in highly complex open heart surgeries with emphasis on minimally invasive access and offers patients a wide variety of surgical options including CABG, open valve, structural heart, ECMO, etc.
Experience with cardiac surgery and EVH is preferred, however qualified and determined new graduates will be considered.
Functions as a surgical assistant in operative procedures under the direct supervision of a staff surgeon in the Operating Room.
Follows established procedural guides in preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures under the supervision of the RN.
Assists all members of the surgical team in providing continuity of patient care according to departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES : Positions patient for procedure following safe positioning techniques and correct body alignment.Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of role of surgical assistant and implements the clinical and technical aspects of this role.
Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation / equipment purpose and function. Safely utilizes equipment and supplies.Safely passes surgical instruments / supplies and specimens during the intraoperative phase;
adjusts surgical instrumentation as needed during operative procedures.Anticipates needs of the surgical staff and communicates the needs with the circulating nurse during the intraoperative phase.
Correctly handles specimens with proper identification and transfer to the circulating nurse.Accurately counts supplies and instruments with the circulating nurse at the beginning, relief and end of procedure.
Develops cooperative / therapeutic relationships with all members of the surgical team.Promotes quality patient care and satisfactory productivity.
Recognizes the need for team efforts for the smooth function of the unit by cooperating with and assisting members of the health care team.
Always adheres to basic rules of asepsis and infection control practices.Demonstrates ability to adapt to young adult, adult and geriatric patient populations by modifying interview techniques, identifying psychosocial, physical and educational needs specific to the patient's age.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS : Good oral and written communication skillsKnowledge of surgical and sterile techniques, instruments and surgical assistance required.
