About the Department

The Office of the Dean of Students in the College has broad responsibility for the success of all College students. The Dean of Students reports to the Dean of the College.

The staff of academic advisers and deans provide academic advising; counseling to students around academic and personal issues, and long-term planning;

referrals for students to other campus resources; advice on preparation for graduate and professional school. The staff of the Office of College Community Standards (OCCS) reports to the Dean of the Students and oversees matters of academic standing and student conduct.

Job Summary

The Assistant Director of the Office of College Community Standards (OCCS) reports to the Director of the Office of College Community Standards and Assistant Dean of Students in the College.

The Assistant Director works closely with UChicago Student Wellness, Student Disability Services, Campus and Student Life, Housing and Residence Life, and the Academic Advisers on issues relating to essential areas of student support.

The Assistant Director provides case management for students going on and returning from suspension. The Assistant Director collaborates with the Director of OCCS to manage the College’s processes for its Area Disciplinary and Academic Standing Committees.

This position also plays a significant role, together with the College Academic Advising Office, to help manage the College’s academic review process.

Responsibilities

  • Works with advisers on developing effective advising strategies for resuming students from suspension.
  • Attends weekly care team meeting with DOS, Housing, and Campus and Student Life staff and is an integral member of the team focused on addressing students of concerns.
  • Manages student requests such as work approval, security clearances, and Dean’s forms for medical and law school.
  • Assists with discipline cases and summons students who experience academic, personal, or discipline challenges.
  • Develops and implements programming relating to community standards.
  • Facilitates outreach and supports students while on suspension from the College to ensure access to resources and facilitate their eventual return to the College.
  • Reviews and approves students for various changes of status.
  • With OCCS team, manages the College’s academic review process.
  • Communicates with students and parents about various College policies and processes.
  • Provides training to Academic Advisers, Resident Heads, and other offices as needed, related to the work of OCCS.
  • Serves as a main point of contact and recommends process improvements for other University Schools and Divisions’ joint-degree programs.
  • Has a deep understanding related to the development of programming for non-academic matters, such as health and wellness and curricular programming.
  • Designs and produces material for the handbook and other academically-related publications.
  • Recommends process improvements for programs that relate to critical student-life improvement, including emergency management, accommodations for students with disabilities, and / or the administration of health care services and programs for students.
  • Collaborates with academic divisions in educating students on safety issues. Interprets student disciplinary issues and prepares an annual university summary of disciplinary actions.

Counsels students, parents, and staff in response to concerns, and handles complex situations including student crises.

Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience : Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications : None

Preferred Qualifications

Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Advanced Degree.

Experience :

  • 5 years relevant experience.
  • 2 years experience working in student case management or conduct.
  • Strong commitment to the advancement of young adults and the values and goals of a liberal arts education.
  • Familiarity with University structure and functions of its various offices and departments.

Technical Skills or Knowledge :

  • Proficiency in Mac and PC environments.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and online organizational tools.
  • Familiarity with Adobe graphic design / web development environments.
  • Proficiency with web and social media platforms.
  • Learn new software and database tools.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent editing / proofreading ability in English.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to use complex databases and other record keeping systems.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage concurrent tasks with interruptions.
