The candidate hired will be required to pass a drug screening, background check and may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.

Hours of Work : 5 / 8’s, Hours & Shifts may vary, must be willing to work rotating various shifts for training and recognize that shifts are selected by seniority, therefore, will most likely be on the graveyard shift.

  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Water Operations including electrical and mechanical operational principles in pumps, motors, and valves;
  • have an understanding of the rules and regulations that guide our operations under the Safe Drinking Water Act, such as the Surface Water Treatment Rule, Lead and Copper Rule, Total Coliform Rule, Disinfection Byproduct Rule, and Ground Water Rule;

will have the ability to obtain a Treatment Operator II within 6 months of hire. Possession of Treatment Operator I and Laboratory Analyst I certificates at the time of hire is desirable.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, monitors, regulates and performs operational requirements in modern, state-of-the-art filtration and / or ozonation potable water treatment equipment and facilities;

and performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of :

  • Operational principles of pumps, valves, electric motors, diesel engines and electronic, computerized and manual control systems;
  • functions and servicing requirements of the equipment at a potable water treatment plant; practices, principles and theories of chemistry and biology as they relate to the treatment of surface water for municipal use;
  • current practices and procedures in chemical, bacteriological and biological analyses; local, state and federal laws and regulations regarding the production, treatment, storage and transmission of potable water, including the Safe Drinking Water Act and relevant EPA regulations;

safety practices and procedures related to the work; micro-computer applications related to the work, including modern, state-of-the-art supervisory control and data acquisition systems.

Ability to :

  • Operate a wide variety of pumping, treatment and control equipment, including digital control equipment; operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in the work;
  • accurately read meters, gauges, valve books, blueprints and schematic drawings; maintain records; prepare clear and concise records and reports;

understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively in writing and orally; establish and maintain effective relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Training and Experience :

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by completion of six college semester units in water treatment or other specialized training toward the Water Treatment Operator Certificate II;

and either four years of District experience in water treatment plant operation, at least two of which were as a Treatment Operator I, or six years of journey-level treatment plant operator experience at a 20 mgd or larger potable water treatment plant, or a four-year college degree with a major in sanitary, public health, chemical engineering, civil engineering, chemistry or equivalent field that includes courses in water treatment and water works practices acceptable to the State Department of Health.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements :

A valid Nevada driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.

Nevada State Health Division Water Treatment Operator II Certificate, or a comparable certificate from another state at time of hire.

If candidate selection is based on a combination of training and experience, then a State of Nevada Water Treatment Operator II certification must be obtained within two years of date of hire.

An AWWA (CA / NV Section) Laboratory Analyst I Certificate must be obtained within one year of date of hire.

A State of Nevada Health Division Water Distribution Operator Grade II certificate must be obtained within one year of date of hire.

Completion of HAZWOPER training within one year from date of hire.

Employees in this class are required to wear respirators regularly. In accordance with OSHA regulations, employees are prohibited from having facial or head hair that impairs the effectiveness of respirator equipment.
