The Eugene S. Pulliam School of Journalism and Creative Media in the College of Communication at Butler University invites applications for a nine-month Lecturer in the Critical Communication and Media Studies (CCM) major with an expected start date of August 2024.

The position is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will also serve as the College of Communication Foundational Course Director who will oversee college required courses including a public speaking course COM 101 (Rhetoric and the American Democratic Tradition), COM 215 (Speech for Business, which is required of all majors in the Lacy School of Business), and SW 266 (Media Literacy).

The successful candidate will teach these courses and classes in the CCM major including courses in their area of expertise from an inclusive pedagogical perspective.

The typical teaching load at Butler University is 12 credit hours a semester, and this position will come with three credits of release each semester for serving in the role of Foundational Course Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A terminal degree (PhD) in communication or related field (ABD considered) by May 2024
  • Potential for successful management of the foundational courses within the college
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses within the CCM major, public speaking, and / or media literacy
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Expressed desire to work with students, faculty, and staff from socially and culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Expressed interest in pedagogical development

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following :

  • Experience directing or coordinating curriculum (i.e., basic course, departmental, programmatic)
  • Successful experience working collaboratively with others (e.g., committee service, curricular development, departmental service, student recruitment)
  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching undergraduate communication courses
  • Articulated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and access
  • Experience developing courses
  • Interest or experience in teaching courses from a critical perspective in any of the following areas : Media StudiesMedia & Cultural TheoryRhetorical StudiesEnvironmental RhetoricFilm StudiesPublic AdvocacySports CommunicationPolitical Communication
  • Experience managing and working with a variety of constituencies
  • Expressed interest in pursuing scholarship related to teaching, instructional communication, communication pedagogy, the basic course, or assessment
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Effective classroom management skills

About Critical Communication & Media Studies : The Critical Communication & Media Studies (CCM) major / minor will be housed within the Eugene S.

Pulliam School of Journalism and Creative Media as of June 1, 2024. CCM is an interdisciplinary course of study that forges leaders through an understanding of the messages and rhetoric from speeches, pop culture, music, books, film, and more.

Students learn how to interrogate issues related to social justice, race, gender, public advocacy and more through a critical-cultural lens.

Critical Communication & Media Studies also offers a minor in film studies. Other programs in the Pulliam School of Journalism and Creative Media include Creative Media and Entertainment, Journalism, Media Industry Studies, and Sports Media.
