About the Facility - Long Beach VAMC

Behavioral Health RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
- The Mental Health Unit is a locked unit comprised of beds for inpatient psychiatry treatment.
- The patients in this unit carry various psychiatric diagnoses including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and cognitive impairment such as dementia.
Many patients may be under involuntary and / or court ordered admissions.
- Shall be responsible for patient assessments, medication administration, interdisciplinary team coordination, admissions, discharges, internal and external transfers, delegating to assistive personnel, electronic medical record documentation, patient transport, withdrawal monitoring and management, and emergency response procedures.
- Shall have knowledge in applying de-escalation techniques to help people manage their emotions and behavior.
- Shall provide evidence-based individual support, such as cognitive behavior therapy principles for depression and anxiety.
- Shall be able to work 8- or 12-hour shifts, days, nights, weekdays, weekends and holidays.
Mental Health Qualifications
- Completed courses for nursing from an accredited program approved by either the Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
- current license in at least one state, territory, or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia.
- minimum of three years' direct patient care experience in the mental health / behavioral health specialty.
- Must have BLS.
