Department Summary
The Office of the Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer advises the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost regarding academic and budgetary planning issues and allocation of campus resources, including issues involving students, faculty, staff, space, real estate, and university finances.
The office also manages the key campus planning processes and data sets that support these decisions, and performs a central role in UCLA's systems of internal control and accountability.
The office also is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of all campus capital projects.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor & Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and serving as a member of the senior management team, the Chief of Staff will work as a partner to the Vice Chancellor & CFO in all University activities.
The Chief of Staff advises the CFO, represents them in discussions with campus senior leadership regarding policies, initiatives and operational issues pertaining to the campus, and makes decisions on behalf of the VC CFO.
Represents the CFO to internal and external constituencies and is charged with decision-making on behalf of the CFO. The position directs and manages the assignment of action items to senior administrators and is responsible for helping the Vice Chancellor & CFO manage his priorities.
The Chief of Staff advises and provides analytical support and leadership on a variety of projects of importance to the campus.
The position maintains confidentiality of privileged information and performs a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility.
The Chief of Staff plays an essential role of internal communication and engagement with various campus constituencies. The position adds to the informed perspective of the Vice Chancellor & CFO and facilitates the implementation of activities within the Vice Chancellor's Office and between the Vice Chancellor's Office and academic and administrative departments.
Salary & Compensation
UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications
- At least twelve (12) years of high-level administration experience advising senior management and / or overseeing complex programs and projects at a large company or public institution. (Required)
- At least ten (10) years experience in management, supervisory, or leadership positions that demonstrate the ability to effectively supervise, delegate, communicate, mentor, and solve problems. (Required)
- Thorough knowledge of the legal constraints and opportunities for higher education in the State of California and through Federal programs and regulations.
Knowledge of the University of California Office of the President, university wide and campus organizational structures. (Preferred)
Excellent ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level to lead subordinate management to develop goals in alignment with mission.
Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques human resources and risk management planning accounting and payroll. (Required)
Effective communication skills, including ability to write clear and concise reports, policies and correspondence ability to interact effectively with many levels of personnel by telephone, in person, and in writing.
Excellent consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills. (Required)
Demonstrated management ability to direct and supervise professional and staff positions ability to train, motivate and provide effective and sound judgment and leadership.
Ability to organize assigned tasks and prioritize heavy workload to meet multiple and constantly changing deadlines. (Required)
Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality, accuracy and attention to detail to respond to unexpected job demands and keep pace with rapidly changing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions appropriately and within the boundaries of assigned authority. (Required)
- Demonstrated ability to research, collect, process, and interpret financial, budgetary, and other administrative data conduct relevant and complete historical analyses of complex policies, financial and budget matters, and develop summarized reports for management. (Required)
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain an effective, productive and cooperative professional relationship with donors, alumni, employees at all levels of the organization, and other constituents work collaboratively with individuals and groups to incorporate their ideas, adapt to their needs. (Required)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact tactfully and diplomatically, yet assertively, with all segments of the campus and community skill in resolving conflict situations and in recognizing politically sensitive situations. (Required)
- Demonstrated ability to give appropriate counsel about complex business and financial matters, analyses, and recommendations clearly and concisely to a wide variety of individuals, at all levels, within and outside the university.
Demonstrated ability managing diverse programs and functions. (Required)
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly independently understand, analyze, and interpret complex written material, financial data, and computer generated information and effectively communicate results of analyses to senior campus management and others. (Required)
- Proven ability and skill to identify and analyze complex situations and needs and recommend or implement effective courses of action for management.
Skill at developing, designing, and implementing operational and procedural policies, new administrative polices, reports, procedures and practices. (Required)
Direct, comprehensive knowledge of the concepts of business and financial management principles including fund accounting, cost accounting, budget management and technical skills to interpret and apply these principles to the varied aspects of the position. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
- Bachelor's Degree (Required) Or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will beconsidered.
- Master's Degree Master's degree or professional degree in relevant discipline and / or equivalent relevant experience. (Preferred)
