Responsibilities*

Strategic Planning

Develop and implement comprehensive, multi-year and annual fundraising plans to increase philanthropic support for both the Department of Psychiatry and the Heinz C.

Prechter Bipolar Research Program, in close collaboration with the department chair, directors, division chiefs, lead faculty, and administrators.

Identify and qualify new major and planned gift prospects by thoughtfully developing and executing both long-range and short-range strategies.

These strategies should be designed to maximize the current and lifetime giving potential of each prospect, while also establishing a steady pipeline of donors capable of making significant contributions.

  • Utilize data-driven insights to inform and refine fundraising strategies, ensuring effective identification, qualification, and engagement of high-potential prospects.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the strategic priorities within the Department of Psychiatry, the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program, and Michigan Medicine as a whole.

Craft and deliver compelling cases for support, both in writing and through presentations, that align the interests of potential donors with the critical needs and initiatives of these programs and the broader University.

Donor & Prospect Management

  • Personally maintain a portfolio of approximately - major and planned gift prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers, while spending approximately 70-80% of time on direct fundraising efforts.
  • Conduct approximately - face-to-face visits with prospects and donors per year and participate in approximately 20-40 solicitations per year.
  • Increase philanthropic support for research, education, and patient care for the benefit of the Department of Psychiatry and the Heinz C.

Prechter Bipolar Research Program.

  • Partner with faculty, staff, volunteers, and board members to build donor pipeline and implement targeted cultivation strategies.
  • Ensure consistent donor engagement by guiding solicitations and developing comprehensive, timely, and innovative stewardship plans for all donors.
  • Provide guidance for fundraising committees and volunteer-led events / activities that support Mental Health Programs at Michigan Medicine.
  • Manage efforts to engage alumni, former residents, fellows, and post-docs across the Department of Psychiatry and related programs.

Collaboration

  • Facilitate activities that lead to prospect identification, engagement, and successful solicitations. Advise chairs, department heads, and development colleagues on the culture, expectations, and needs of medical development constituents.
  • Maintain strong communication with colleagues across the University of Michigan medical and academic campuses to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals.
  • Partner with faculty, staff, and other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Michigan Medicine campaign goals.
  • Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

Other

  • Participate in Michigan Medicine Development events as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least five years of experience in fundraising, public relations, and / or alumni relations.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support, and endowment gifts.
  • Proven success working in a multifaceted development environment.
  • Experience working in healthcare fundraising, including a proven track record of securing gifts of $K and more.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine, and mature personal style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Working on site three days per week at the Michigan Medicine Development offices.
  • Available to manage periodic travel and a flexible schedule, when needed.
  • Candidate must have reliable internet when working remotely.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program and grateful patient fundraising.

Work Locations

The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the Building. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.

This position is a flexible, hybrid position. Candidates will need to live in a commutable distance to the office and the expectation is to work from the office 3 days a week, except while traveling on university business.

Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on business needs.
