Job Description and Duties

The Natural Resources Law Section of the Public Rights Division advises and represents state agency clients including, among others, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Department of Water Resources, the Air Resources Board, the State Water Resources Control Board, the Regional Water Quality Control Boards, the Department of Pesticide Regulation, CAL FIRE, the Board of Forestry, CalRecycle, and the Department of Food and Agriculture.

  • Under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General (SAAG), the Chief Assistant Attorney General (CAAG), the Chief Deputy Attorney General (CDAG), and the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General Supervisor directs and monitors the work of a team of subordinate attorneys, may directly supervise paralegals, and directs the work of support staff;
  • evaluates the performance of subordinate attorneys and paralegals; provides training to subordinate attorneys and paralegals;
  • handles general administrative matters; interviews and selects, or actively participates in the interview and selection process for, subordinate attorneys and paralegals;

possesses the highest level of skill with complex civil litigation and may be called upon to apply hands-on knowledge to supplement the litigation efforts of existing teams engaged in litigation based on operational needs, and to personally perform the most difficult and complex legal work related to jury trials, bench trials, writs, appeals, and administrative hearings, which requires the highest level of independent judgment.

Travel within the state is required, including to personally mentor and assist deputies who are engaged in trials, depositions, meetings, mediations and other matters requiring hands-on knowledge of the civil litigation process.

Experience regarding practical application of attorney ethical and conflict rules governing representation of California state agencies is a beneficial, desired skill.
