The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking an individual to join the Nature Preserves and Programs Team as an Environmental Education Programs Assistant Manager within the Environmental Education Programs & Support Office.

This position is directly responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing youth conservation and stewardship program delivery including the following :

  • Neighborhood Ecology Corps (NEC) a three-year, environmental literacy program serving 6th-10th grade participants through weekly programs and multiple field trips during the school year
  • Summer youth conservation program includes a summer intern crew focused on conservation and natural resource management throughout multiple sites within the City of Raleigh
  • Internal programming support to other sites, teams, groups within the Department and City

This role collaborates frequently with others in the team as well as throughout the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department to further the mission of the department.

Work Location :

This position’s office is in Walnut Creek Wetland Park in Raleigh, NC and requires daily in-person work and some travel between program site and meeting locations.

The Nature Preserves and Programs Team is part of the City’s Natural Resources Unit, which is devoted to connecting people and nature through experiences, conservation, and education and is comprised of 3 Nature Preserves, 1 Nature Park, the Environmental Education Programs & Support Office, and the Land Stewardship Program.

Responsibilities :

  • Oversees the development, planning, and delivery of youth conservation and stewardship programming, including NEC and a summer youth conservation intern program
  • Develops and regularly updates a robust NEC program curriculum with alignment to the state academic standards
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and schedules part-time staff, interns, and volunteers in collaboration with the Program Manager
  • Assists in the direct delivery of programming, including but not limited to : driving passenger vehicles of program participants for off-site trips, teaching programs as needed, leading overnight camping trips, summer day camp delivery, and working some evenings and weekends
  • Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders, including other Divisions within the department and outside agencies, organizations, and community groups
  • Enforces regulations and standards of conduct, observing necessary precautions to ensure safety of all program participants and rendering first aid in cases of minor injury
  • Assists with the planning and coordination of emergency response efforts and risk management, and will additionally assist the City as needed in clean-up and repair during inclement weather situations
  • Works as a team member of the Natural Resources Unit to further the mission of the department.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, forestry, urban forestry or field directly related to assignment and two years of directly related experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications

Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications :

  • CPR / First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • One or more years of experience in supervision of employees.
  • Two or more years of experience developing, delivering, and evaluating environmental education programs aligned with state academic standards.
  • Experience in a park, nature center, zoo, aquarium, museum, school, or similar setting.
  • Experience working with communities that have been historically underrepresented within fields related to natural resources, environmental education, etc.
  • North Carolina Environmental Education Certification and / or Park and Recreation Professional Certification.

Knowledge of :

  • Principles and practices of program administration and management.
  • Principles and methods of qualitative and quantitative research.
  • Principles and applications of critical thinking and analysis.
  • Supervisory principles, practices and techniques (based on assignment).
  • Practices and methods of coaching and leading the work of others (based on assignment).
  • Techniques and methods for organizing, prioritizing, assigning and monitoring work (based on assignment).
  • Best practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  • Modern budget practices.
  • Project management principles.
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment).

  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.

ADA and Other Requirements :

Positions in this class typically require : stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work :

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions :

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.

  • frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids);
  • frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment);

frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
