This positon is in the School of Nursing (SoN) and reports directly to the Program Chair. The position combines teaching, scholarship, and service.

We define teaching as creating environments that facilitate student learning and the attainment of expected outcomes at the course and program levels.

Faculty has ownership for the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of the curricula within the School of Nursing which are designed to prepare graduates to provide nursing care in a dynamic health care environment.

Service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve the University, the nursing profession and the community.

Service consists of meaningful activities that promote the image, mission or strategic priorities of the University, the well-being of relevant individuals or groups among the community of interest or the professional growth of faculty.

Scholarship reflects activities, including practice, resulting in the translation, production, reorganization / refinement, dissemination or creation of work that advances knowledge and practice in nursing.

Duties and Responsibilities :

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Program Director is a regular ranked faculty member of the School of Nursing who is responsible for the oversight of the PMHNP program for all SMU campuses.

The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Graduate Nursing Program. The Director is responsible for the development, oversight, and day to day operations of the PMHNP program, including curricular regulation and accreditation compliance, clinical site development, faculty development, and interaction with students.

Major Areas of responsibilities include but not limited to :

Administration (50%)

General Management

  • Develops and manages the PMHNP program in conjunction with university and graduate leadership, and program faculty.
  • Ensures that the PMHNP program complies with all regulation and CCNE accreditation requirements.
  • Works in conjunction with the CoN Clinical Coordination Team (CCT) to identify and develop appropriate PMH clinical practice sites and opportunities for students, including telemedicine.
  • Provides consultation to the CCT regarding dates, deadlines, submission and return of required forms that are essential to student placements in clinical site.
  • Serves as supervisor for all program faculty and preceptors.
  • Recommends changes in University and School of Nursing policies and procedures as needed.
  • Authors reports (e.g. program evaluation, contributions to accreditation) as related to the PMHNP program.
  • Provides input to budget formation related to the PMHNP program.
  • Serves as an excellent example of customer service for coordinators, faculty, and students.
  • Reviews survey data and identifies action steps to implement changes in support of continuous program quality improvement.
  • Attends university ceremonies and events that are related to the PMHNP program.

Students

  • Oversees PMHNP student recruitment and admission.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of student program orientation including didactic and clinical courses; processes, procedures, expectations, and consequences.
  • Facilitates informal resolutions to student disputes after course faculty and coordinators have intervened.
  • Communicates issues regarding student performance to program administrators on an ongoing, basis.

Faculty

  • Oversees the hiring of qualified faculty.
  • Oversees faculty course assignment.
  • Oversees faculty development.
  • Completes annual faculty evaluation for PMHNP faculty.

Clinical Practice and or scholarship ( 20%)

  • Maintains clinical competency and currency by engaging in practice as a PMHNP.
  • Serves as clinical preceptor for PMHNP students as appropriate.

Teaching (30%)*

  • Creates a dynamic, learner-centered environment that uses a variety of teaching methods based on educational theory and evidence-based teaching and clinical practices that support the diverse learning needs of the student population.
  • Models reflective and critical thinking and serves as a coach and mentor for students; confers with them on their progress and assists them in the development of learning plans to facilitate successful achievement of course objectives.
  • Maintains and enhances competence in subjects being taught.
  • Confers with colleagues to assure the integrity of the courses across programs and the curriculum as a whole.
  • Prepares and reviews written examinations, papers, and student projects; supervises independent study projects as needed and evaluates learner performance in both the classroom and clinical settings.
  • Notifies Course Manager of at-risk students or unusual occurrences.
  • Documents student progress on appropriate forms.
  • Teaches a minimum of 216 hours in an academic year (8 didactic units).

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements :

Education & Experience

  • Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP), eligible for licensure in California
  • Nationally board certified as a PMHNP.
  • Earned doctorate in nursing (DNP, PhD, DNSc, DNS, EdD).
  • At least three years of experience in advanced practice nursing.
  • At least two years of progressive experience in teaching in graduate nursing.
  • Experience with online educational delivery preferred.
  • Experience in academic administration preferred.

Skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication.

  • Excellent customer relations

Abilities

  • Ability to function effectively as an academic leader, member of a team, and independently.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through verbal and written communication.
  • Hand and finger dexterity for computer, calculator, copy machine, and telephone use.
  • Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word in person or on the telephone.
