This position serves as a mid-level systems administrator for NSF NCAR Research IT (NRIT) performing up to high-level systems management in a heterogeneous environment consisting of Linux / Mac / Windows systems.
This involves planning and installing new components and services, as well as engagement with operations, configuration management, maintenance, upgrades, system security and performance tuning.
Primary responsibilities revolve around Linux configurations and management. The successful candidate is part of a team of administrative and IT professionals in a supportive environment that prioritizes teamwork, psychological safety, creativity, and staff development.

What You Will Do
Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.
Works as a team member responsible for the management and operation of NRIT services and systems with an emphasis on Linux systems.
Participates in the development and oversight of resources involving complex system design, also helping to formulate broader requirements for scripts involving complex interactions between multiple operating systems.
Receives and helps to set direction regarding appropriate system maintenance procedures, including support of code, documentation and services.
Consults with peers and may set direction in areas to investigate for future development and relays such information to coordinated teams or senior management before implementation.
Researches, plans, and installs new components, and services and engages in upgrades, system security, and performance tuning.
Maintains secure software installations, configuration, and documentation.
Supports services and infrastructure for distributed computing and data management.
Monitors hardware and software problems via automated problem tracking systems, and delegates troubleshooting tasks as appropriate.
Actively participates in AGILE principles for project management utilizing Atlassian Jira or other project management software.
Manages daily workflow, consults with peers, and updates information through the use of a common help desk. Resolves problems and requests in minimum time in an efficient and effective manner
Mentors, other systems administrators, and members of the NRIT team to promote a learning environment. Participates in organizational-wide committees and may lead committees to help determine policies.
Creates and maintains online documentation of deployed service and platform environments, for distributing information to the service owners and other systems administrators.
Receives supervision, guidance, and review of project objectives including critical issues and alternative solutions. Consults with supervision and / or management concerning unusual problems and developments.
Takes leadership roles in defining computing direction, solving problems, and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities.
Prioritizes multiple tasks and consults with supervisors or more senior system administrators concerning unusual problems and developments.
Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives.

Education and Experience :
Bachelor's degree in computer-related field.
- Progressive relevant experience, which is typically gained by four to eight years of experience;
- OR- equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
REQUIRED
Advanced knowledge in installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems and networks in heterogeneous environments.
Specifically, Red Hat Linux, Debian, and their derivatives such as Alma and Ubuntu.
Ability to adapt, integrate, and install externally developed software.
Advanced knowledge and support for complex enterprise-class services such as DNS, DHCP, LDAP, and SMTP.
Knowledge and skill in evaluation, specification, purchase, installation, configuration management, security administration, disposal, maintenance, performance management, and troubleshooting computer systems and services.
Ability to explain advanced concepts with high technical complexity to others of various technical backgrounds. Concepts include general security controls as well as risks and impacts of decisions.
Demonstrated skill with at least two scripting or programming languages, e.g. Perl, Python, PHP, C, etc.
Ability to work in a team environment effectively with members on different schedules.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to employ active listening to NRIT or program needs to craft solutions to technical problems at a high level of complexity.
Customer and results-focused. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
Ability to stay current on industry practices and leading technologies and / or include in duties section.
Ability to occasionally work outside of normal working hours, and to travel occasionally for training.
Familiarity with AWS deployment.
