Job Summary

POWER Engineers is currently seeking a Substation Physical Designer in the Power Delivery Substation Department in our Boston, Massachusetts office.

An in-office and / or hybrid work environment is available for this position. A remote role may be considered depending on the individual's level of experience and proven ability to work on a remote basis successfully.

Role and Responsibilities

• This position includes working within a team to complete complex and technically challenging aspects of electrical utility substation design and understanding and adhering to client standards
• Perform the detailed Physical design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations. Typical designs include but not limited to : One-line diagramsPhysical layoutsSubstation equipment selectionSubstation general arrangement plans, sections, and elevationsControl building design and detailsCable and conduit plans and detailsGround grid design and detailsLightening protection design and detailsYard lighting design and detailsMaterial listsAC and DC systems calculations and sizing
• Work with engineers to develop drawing packages
• Coordinate designs with other disciplines such as Substation Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil
• Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs
• Contribute to engineering project scheduling and budget management

Required Education / Experience

• Ability to function as a Substation Physical Designer in our Freeport, Maine office
• Associate's degree or equivalent technical education
• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation; experience with both is preferred
• Understanding of electric utility substation design
• Electrical and mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail
• Good command of the Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Outlook, Excel and Word
• The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship

Desired Education / Experience

• Three (3) or more years experience in electric utility substation design is preferred
• Familiarity with Raster Design and / or Bentley Descartes
• Ability to produce applicable drawings from rough sketches, notes, client examples, vendor drawings, and such
• Ability to select materials based on technical requirements
