The VP of Property Accounting is responsible for managing and directing a department consisting of Property Controllers, Accounting Managers, Team Leaders, Property Accountants, and Interns with a focus on individual development and exceptional work quality customized to individual client needs while meeting all Hawthorne accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Oversee the Property Accounting Department consisting of 40+ accounting professionals including Controllers, Accounting Managers, Team Leaders, and Staff Accountants responsible for the Property Accounting close procedures, including preparation of the close calendar, monitoring close deliverables, review of journal entries and account reconciliations, and preparation and review of flux analysis.
- Lead and mentor the Property Accounting Department to successfully complete tasks within planned timelines, including overseeing hiring and career development of all Property Accounting teams.
- Support and maintain team camaraderie.
- Final interview new candidates.
- Oversee training program of new employees.
- Oversee timely completion of 90-day and annual performance evaluations.
- Develop and oversee ongoing career development programs for all accounting team members.
- Participate in formal coaching or termination of team members with performance deficiencies.
- Directly supervise Property Controllers, providing training, support, and leadership to ensure they fulfill their obligations and grow in their roles.
- Complete annual performance evaluations.
- Support in implementing accounting policies, procedures, and systems as required, ensuring internal control procedures are adequate, properly documented, and regularly reviewed.
- Manage efforts to strengthen the control environment and implement process improvements, focusing on enhancing technology use and developing automated solutions.
- Oversee and enforce accounting procedures and audit controls for Property accounting, holding teams accountable.
- Lead cross-functional projects as requested, including design of end-to-end processes and working with IT / Software Support team to test and implement systems.
- Oversee tax compliance for Properties, coordinating with the company's and client's outside tax CPA and / or audit firms to ensure timely completion of tax returns and audits.
- Ensure seamless accounting onboarding of new managed properties, partnering with Hawthorne's internal corporate accounting team for intercompany and chargeback accounting between Properties and Corporate.
- Partner with Hawthorne's investments teams for financials / reporting necessary for refinancing or dispositions.
- Oversee timely final accounting for disposed properties.
- Support various ad-hoc projects as required by the business.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : Supervises the Property Controllers.
FLSA STATUS : Exempt
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS : Reports directly to the Executive Vice President.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS :
Hours of Work : 8 : 00am / 9 : 00am to 4 : 45pm / 6 : 00pm Monday through Friday. Schedule may vary. Extended hours may be required during peak periods to meet business needs.
Travel : Overnight travel may be required for annual leadership conference and other training or company events.
AMOUNT OF OVERTIME : This position is exempt from overtime and may entail working hours as needed to perform the position requirements satisfactorily.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Must be able to perform the physical functions of the position, which may include effective communication with team members, supervisors, vendors, and service providers.
Must be able to see, hear, talk, sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : Must have 8-10 years of progressive accounting experience. Property Management experience preferred.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. NC CPA license required.
COMMUNICATION : Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form with Ownerships, Executive Leadership, Controllers, Accounting Managers, Team Leaders, Property Accountants, Community Managers, Regional Managers, corporate team members, and outside vendors.
REASONING ABILITY : Must be able to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect pertinent data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and initiate appropriate courses of action.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Advanced knowledge of mathematics required. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
Ability to calculate interest, fractions, percentages, and ratios. The ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
Ability to perform the operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
COMPUTER SKILLS : Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, Yardi Voyager knowledge preferred.
PRE EMPLOYMENT TESTS : Successfully complete pre-employment psychological and basic skills exam, including interest patterns.
Pass drug test and background check requirements.
