Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range : Upon successful completion of a police academy, the starting salary for a police officer is $88,020 annually up to a maximum of $101,892 per year at the Police Officer level.
While attending the academy Recruits receive a salary that is 75% of the starting police officer salary or $66,012 annually at Recruit level.
Insurance : While in the capacity of a Police Officer Recruit, the City provides medical insurance for the staff member only.
Upon appointment as a Police Officer, the City pays up to $1,931.04 per month toward medical insurance. The City pays up to $226.
30 toward the cost of dental insurance coverage for the staff member and eligible dependents. The City offers a vision insurance plan but does not contribute to the monthly cost.
Term Life Insurance : The City also provides a life insurance policy in the amount of $60,000.
Other benefits include : Educational incentive, uniform allowance, and specialty assignment premiums.
Retirement : California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS.
The City does not participate in Social Security but does participate in Medicare, which requires a 1.45% contribution by both the staff member and the City.
Leave : After appointment to the position of Police Officer, 176 hours per year of Sick Leave; 96 hours of Vacation per year, increasing with longevity.
In lieu of holidays, Officers assigned to Patrol receive 112 hours of "Holiday Comp. Time" annually.
$30,000 Sign-On Bonus
A Sign-On bonus of up to $30,000 will be paid as follows :
- $5,000 when sworn-in as a Police Officer;
- $5,000 after six (6) months of service;
- $5,000 at the end of one (1) year probation;
- $5,000 at the end of the second year of service;
$5,000 at the end of the third year of service; and
$5,000 at the end of the fourth year of service
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
A Police Officer Recruit is a non-sworn staff member in a training position. Successful candidates are appointed to a temporary position of Police Officer Recruit while attending a P.
O.S.T certified basic police academy. Such staff members are expected to successfully complete all requirements leading to graduation from the police academy and perform related work as assigned.
While at the academy, they receive rigorous academic and physical training in many diverse areas of law enforcement. Upon graduation from the academy, a Recruit will be promoted to the position of probationary Police Officer.
Newly appointed Police Officers will begin a field training program during which time they will receive on the job training in narcotics, arrest procedures, investigations, report writing and many other related assignments.
Upon completion of the training program, the new staff members will then begin a 12-month probationary period. The probationary period may be extended an additional six months at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Twenty and one-half (20 1 / 2) years of age
United States Citizen or Naturalized Citizen
High School graduate or equivalent
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver License
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
The Hermosa Beach Police Department is a full-service organization committed to high quality service to the residents of Hermosa Beach.
Each member of the organization is critical to the fulfillment of the law enforcement mission. The Police Department consists of 38 sworn officers and 30 civilian personnel.
In addition to the Patrol Bureau, there are the specialized units of Detectives, Motors, Backgrounds and Training. Selection to specialized assignments is based upon a staff member’s knowledge, interest, and ability.
The Department offers the 3 / 12 work schedule for patrol officers and the 4 / 10 schedule for many of the specialized assignments.
The Department is very active in providing advanced officer training to encourage career development. The City sponsors a number of special events throughout the year providing many opportunities for extra detail assignments.
The Department enjoys a very good relationship with and the confidence of the residential and business community due to quick response times and efforts to solve problems.
