Responsibilities
Medical Laboratory Technician
Follows established procedures to perform routine and STAT clinical laboratory testing for all waived and moderate complexity testing, blood collection, and specimen processing.
Makes sound decisions consistent with departmental policies and procedures and scope of practice. Handles situations not covered by written or verbal instructions appropriately.
Routinely reviews pending reports and investigates and manages all outstanding specimen / test issues and delays.
Qualifications
Background Requirements :
- Associates of Science Degree in Medical Lab Technology or equivalent required.
- Valid California license as a Medical Laboratory Technician required
- Minimum two years as a Medical Lab Technician preferred
Essential Job Duties :
- Accurately reads, interprets, records, and maintains records of patient testing.
- Learns new procedures / assignments in a timely manner,
- Maintains an up to date working knowledge of all technical procedures in the department and operation of all instrumentation.
- Makes sound decisions consistent with departmental policies and procedures and scope of practice. Handles situations not covered by written or verbal instructions appropriately.
- Routinely reviews pending reports and investigates and manages all outstanding specimen / test issues and delays.Consults with or apprises CLS, Manager, or Medical Director regarding matters beyond own scope of responsibility or knowledge.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the Manager or Director.
- Participates in the continuing Quality Improvement process in the clinical laboratory
- Performs, documents, reviews, and analyzes quality control data, identifies QC / QA trends or problems, and takes appropriate corrective action according to departmental procedures and in compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Appropriately consults with or apprises CLS, Lab Director, Medical Director, or Supervisor regarding matters beyond own scope of responsibility or knowledge.
Exhibits ability to assess a situation, consider the alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action.
- Ensures the validity and accuracy of test results as required by departmental policies and procedures as well as regulatory agencies.
- Participates in proficiency testing events.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies.
- Participates in continuing education programs and consults current technical literature to keep current on changes in the field.
- Readily recognizes and performs duties needing attention although not directly responsible and regularly helps coworkers.
- Promptly notifies appropriate personnel of reagent, instrumentation, or other issue that may affect patient care or delays in patient testing.
- Demonstrates effective, clear, and courteous oral and written communication skills, conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively, and asking pertinent questions where clarification is needed.
- Interacts with fellow workers to promote a harmonious, productive, and cooperative working environment.
- Assists in training and evaluates competency of new employees and takes action to correct deficiencies as requested by Manager and / or Director.
- Handles phone communication with timeliness, courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality.
- Readily adapts to schedule changes and is flexible to work shifts and schedules as required by department needs.
