Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ is a nonprofit organization that serves the Jewish community in Essex, Morris, Sussex, Union, and parts of Somerset County in NJ.

POSITION OVERVIEW The Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest hosts one of the largest delegations of Shlichim from the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) in the country, currently comprised of 1 Senior Community Shaliach and 6 Israeli emissaries in their pre-army gap year (usually called Shinshinim but which in our community we call Rishonim ).

Our Rishonim are placed in multiple institutions across our catchment area bringing Israeli culture, love of Israel, and creating everlasting connections with community members of all ages and stages.

Our Mishlachat is a huge source of pride and one of the main ways in which Global Connections engages our community with Israel.

Reporting to the Senior Community Shaliach, the Mishlachat Coordinator will serve as a key member of the Global Connections Department, overseeing all aspects of the Rishonim program, the relationship and coordination with their Host Families, and working with the Mishlachat committee (comprised of a small group of lay leaders) to enhance the overall experience of our Shlichim.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Supervision of Rishonim (65%) Engage with the Rishonim in a caring and supportive manner, creating a space of trust that enables them to thrive and navigate cultural differences between Israel and the US;
  • Ensure Rishonim perform their responsibilities with professionalism and adhere to the guidelines of Federation and the institutions where they are placed;

Run weekly Rishonim group meetings and regular individual check-ins with each Rishon; Remain on top of all logistical and operational aspects related to the Rishonim (i.

e. planning their welcome transition week, helping set their bank accounts, ensuring their cars are ready to be driven before they arrive, etc.

  • Working hand in hand with the Manager of Israel Education & Engagement, and in collaboration with the Mishlachat committee and Federation colleagues who oversee the institutions where our Rishonim are placed : Create the work calendar for the Rishonim;
  • Provide resources to support them in their engagement with their institutions; Occasionally visit Rishonim at their institutions, both to assess their performance and to ensure the institutions are providing all the necessary supports;
  • Support Rishonim in creating their own programs for the wider community. In coordination with Federation’s Israel office and the Jewish Agency for Israel, support the screening and interview process, and the orientation program for selected Rishonim;

Serve as point-person and have regular check-ins with the Israeli families of the Rishonim. Coordination of Host Families (25%) Responsible for identifying host families that are appropriate for each Rishon in a timely manner.

  • This involves : Partnering with Federation professionals and volunteers to identify and recruit host families from the entire Greater MetroWest community;
  • Creating a pipeline of prospective host families; Interviewing prospective host families and inspecting their homes; Connecting the prospective host families with the Mishlachat Committee’s Host Families Liaison (this is a volunteer position) as well as with prior host families;
  • Having regular check-ins with current hosts and helping them create a meaningful hosting experience, including planning occasional host family gatherings;

Running the orientation for host families before each term; Keeping all hosting documents and forms updated and relevant.

  • Keep ongoing connection with prospective and past host families. General Mishlachat & Global Connections Responsibilities (10%) Staff the Mishlachat Committee;
  • In coordination with the Mishlachat committee, ensure all logistical aspects of the transitions between Senior Community Shlichim (and their families should they come with them) are taken care of;
  • Serve as a thought-partner for the Senior Community Shaliach and the Mishlachat Committee addressing how to maximize the impact of the Mishlachat in our community;
  • Take part in, and occasionally lead, Global Connections programs / events; Ensure interactions with volunteers are captured in our database system;
  • Ensure interactions with past, current, and prospective host families are captured and organized, and that all information about Rishonim is organized and updated;

Ensure professional communication and timely follow-up; Follow Federation and Global Connections guidelines for program and event planning.

  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; Fluent Hebrew level (native level preferred) ;
  • Experience supervising teens and / or young adults; Experience collaborating with volunteers; Valid Driver’s License. EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This position will require flexibility to support the Mishlachat on an as-needed basis which can include weekends and evenings;
  • Position requires driving regularly (gas and toll expenses that exceed the commute to Federation to be paid by Federation) and be physically present at different sites, mostly in New Jersey;
