Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges.
The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County.
The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400
enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a PT TRIO Administrative Assistant. This position interacts with students on a daily basis and provides support for programs and services that are critical to TRIO student academic success.
This position provides general administrative and programmatic support to the Office of TRIO Student Support Services, providing direct administrative support to the TRIO Director and TRIO Academic Success Coaches, delivering front office reception services, coordinating purchasing activities, managing office supplies, managing / processing student records, assisting with recruitment and retention of TRIO students, and communicating with employees and patrons of the TRIO office.
The Administrative Assistant is also responsible for data tracking, research and report generation required by the federal TRIO grant, the VWCC Institutional Effectiveness (IE) plan, and the Virginia Community College System ( VCCS ).
This is a restricted position dependent upon the conditions of the federal TRIO grant under the Department of Education. Funding for this position has been secured through August 31, 2025.
A new 5-year TRIO grant application was submitted in July 2024 to request additional funding for the 2025-2030 grant cycle.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's / Required Qualifications
Proficiency in MS Word and Excel. Strong problem-solving skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to prioritize tasks, assess needs, and problem solve.
Experience and / or post-secondary coursework in administrative support, office procedures, office and records management, office machines, and word processing.
Additional Considerations
Background similar to TRIO Student Support Services participants (e.g., first generation college student, experienced financial challenges, has a disability) preferred.
Knowledge of community college mission and programs preferred. Associate degree in Administrative Support or related field preferred.
At least 3 years of work experience including records management, data entry, and data collection preferred.
