Environmental Services Senior Project Manager

This position is in the Environmental Licensing & Permitting Section of the Corporate Environmental Services Department supporting new development and M&A opportunities for NextEra Energy Transmission and other NextEra Energy affiliates throughout the US.

We are seeking a Senior Project Manager who has a passion for environmental due diligence and licensing and permitting of electric transmission projects.

The applicant must have relevant environmental siting, routing, permitting, and project management experience, with the ability to lead, with limited direction, environmental functions for new corporate transmission development opportunities and acquisitions.

The position provides the opportunity to use your environmental knowledge and skills to support competitive proposals, acquire permits, complete risk assessments, conduct due diligence, and advise multidisciplinary teams on environmental risk and permitting strategies.

Primary responsibilities include working closely with development teams and external consultants to help prepare competitive proposals, and for awarded projects, to obtain all required federal, state, and local environmental licenses, permits, and approvals for construction.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate experience with California Public Utilities Commission Proponent’s Environmental Assessments and California Environmental Quality Act compliance and federal right-of-way acquisition and National Environmental Quality Act compliance.

Candidates must demonstrate expert knowledge of and experience with aquatic, biological, and cultural surveys and studies;

federal, state, and local permitting; risk assessments; due diligence; and agency coordination, such as coordination with the U.

S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and other federal, state, and local permitting agencies.

The job location is San Francisco, California. However, remote, regionally appropriate home-based locations or other NextEra office locations may be negotiated.

Routine travel (up to 50%) may be required.

Other Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 15 years of directly relevant experience
  • Expert knowledge of environmental permitting and regulations
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills as well as analysis, problem solving, compliance, leadership, and process / project management skills

  • Management and oversight of environmental field studies and consultants, including development / management of vendor contracts / purchase orders / invoices;

ensure sourcing processes comply with corporate procurement and financial policies

  • Effective and timely communications with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to support multiple projects with multifaceted environmental and regulatory issues and assist in resolving complex environmental matters
  • Maintain current knowledge of, and ensure compliance with, pertinent federal, state, and local environmental policies and regulations as well as company policies
  • Interface with internal and external customers, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders
  • Maximize operational flexibility and environmental benefits for costs incurred
  • Translate regulations and permits into actionable tasks
  • Provide guidance on alternatives to minimize environmental impacts
  • Review, monitor, comment on, and effectively communicate business implications of emerging environmental legislation and regulations
  • Assist with development of strategy and communicate environmental requirements to management
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Schedule flexibility with the ability to work extended hours as needed

Job Overview

This job is responsible for obtaining approvals, licenses and permits for construction and operation of new and existing company facilities from federal, state, provincial, regional and local agencies.

Employees in this job serves as the subject matter expert providing specialized environmental expertise and environmental technical support to ensure compliance with environmental laws, regulations and permits.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive environmental due diligence reviews, assists with facility compliance audits, and conducts environmental licensing and permitting activities
  • Provides specialized expertise to ensure cost effective environmental solutions that maximize operational flexibility, maximize environmental benefits for costs incurred, and contribute to improved system reliability and customer satisfaction
  • Translates regulations and permits into actionable construction compliance tasks
  • Obtains permit modifications for existing permits and obtains new permits for construction and maintenance activities
  • Provides guidance on alternatives to minimize environmental impacts
  • Identifies, tracks, and analyzes environmental construction compliance performance metrics
  • Reviews, monitors and comments on emerging legislation and regulations that might have an impact on operations compiles input and data to develop company policy and comments and positions presented to regulators
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

The base pay for this position is $120,000.00 to $180,000.00 per year. This range is estimated for this role. Actual pay may be different.
