The College of Medicine (COM) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) seeks an outstanding and dynamic medical educator for the position of

faculty Course Director of Principles of Clinical Medicine (PCM).

It is anticipated that this position will require 80% effort as faculty Course Director of PCM with a corresponding 20% effort in clinical care.

However, if two qualified candidates are approved, the college will consider dividing the duties to have one PCM Course Director for the M1 year, and another for the M2 year who will work together as co-course director to provide a seamless delivery of the PCM curriculum to the students.

It is anticipated that 40-50% effort would be required for each co-director.

The PCM curriculum consists of a series of six 1-semester courses that introduce students to behavioral, cognitive, and clinical skills needed to become physicians.

The first PCM course starts in the Fall semester of the first year and continues through the second semester of the second year.

Students in the fourth year assist first- and second-year students in practicing clinical skills in preparation for their role as residents.

Evidence-based principles are emphasized throughout. Preclinical students gain early exposure to patients through a community preceptor experience. The

faculty Course Director

is assisted by five faculty members assigned to the course and two full-time staff.

Position Overview and Responsibilities :

  • Oversee all curriculum components of PCM (M1, M2 and M4 years).
  • Actively participate in the delivery of the curriculum content and skills training sessions in concert with other PCM faculty.
  • Review and update course goals and objectives as needed.
  • Develop a comprehensive syllabus and review it for consistency and organization.
  • Oversee scheduling of content and facilities in collaboration with the PCM Coordinator.
  • Oversee course budget.
  • Work with course administrators and Office of Medical Education to integrate the PCM curriculum with other components of the MD curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Consultant for Standardized Patient training sessions and other course faculty to assure effective delivery of learning events and goals.
  • Enlist, train, and coordinate faculty to serve as small group facilitators, Master Clinicians, and content experts for PCM.
  • Provide formative and summative assessment of medical student performance including the development of quizzes, activities for formative feedback, and new / revised items for summative assessment.
  • Be up to date on current Step 1 content and ensure that this information is prominently integrated within the PCM curriculum.
  • Mentor / counsel medical students to ensure academic success.
  • Contribute to faculty development by serving as a mentor for instructors participating in the PCM courses.
  • Oversee the community preceptor program in collaboration with the Community Preceptor Coordinator.
  • Serve as a member of the College of Medicine curriculum committees and the Quality Improvement and Compliance Committee.
  • Provide assessment data, and attend Progress and Promotions Committees as an ex-officio member as requested by Associate Dean for Medical Education
  • Engage in scholarship, clinical service, and academically related public service.
  • Other duties as needed for the success of PCM and the COM as a whole.

This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Medical Education and Chair of Medical Education.

Required Qualifications : The successful candidate must have an MD / DO degree, must be at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, and have a minimum of 6 months leadership experience as a course director or some other recognized leadership role related to medical student curriculum.

In addition, the individual must :

  • Be board-certified by one of the member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), preferably in a primary care specialty.
  • Have an established record of clinical practice and clinical medical education.
  • Have strong organizational and managerial skills.
  • Have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Have documented ability to communicate effectively and work with students and faculty of UTHSC COM.
  • Have a strong commitment to teamwork.
  • Be domiciled in or willing to relocate to Memphis, TN.
  • Have unrestricted credentials appropriate for a medical staff appointment within UTHSC, COM, and be licensed, or able to obtain a license, to practice medicine in the state of Tennessee, upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications : Individuals meeting these additional qualifications are preferred.

  • Have experience with point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) and work with the Director of Undergraduate POCUS to incorporate ultrasound within the PCM curriculum and / or willingness to collaborate with ultrasound-trained faculty to integrate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) instruction with traditional physical exam skills.
  • Training or experience in curriculum development, faculty development / mentoring, student mentoring, and performance evaluation of medical students.
  • Experience with innovative teaching methods such as interactive flipped classroom, large and small group formats, team-based learning, case-based learning, problem-based learning, medical simulation, and asynchronous instruction and evaluation methods.
  • Interest in medical education scholarship.
  • Participation in national organizations or committees devoted to medical education.
  • Emerging or established regional or national reputation if at the associate professor or higher rank.
