General Summary of Position

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has a full time opening for a Surgical Coordinator at our Foot and Hand Center. This position is Monday-Friday, day shift.

The Surgical Coordinator will schedule all surgical activities for the Foot and Hand Center, including posting of cases, pre-certification of insurance and admissions, and communicating with patients and physicians.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for coordinating and scheduling all Departmental surgical cases, revising schedules as required. Essential to coordinating several surgeons, equipment and diagnostics procedures for complex cases.

Arrange for special equipment needed for neurosurgery cases. Oversee surgery scheduling to ensure maximum use of OR time.

  • Functions as a liaison to physicians and the department, as relates to surgery coordination and ensures that patient complaints and / or problems are addressed promptly and efficiently.
  • Collect accurate patient demographics and insurance information. Printing and distributing weekly surgery schedule to appropriate staff.

Communicate with insurance companies and patients to obtain required precertification to ensure Department will receive payments for all services provided.

Inform patients of pre operative requirements and provide necessary orders and instructions to patients, various admitting departments and PCPs.

This ensures efficient preparation of patients for surgery and assists in decreasing their anxiety. Provide good communication with the OR, Pre Admission Testing, Neurodiagnostics and Hospital Admissions to minimize risk of delays.

Provides backup coverage, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Equivalent medical office experience preferred.

Experience

3-4 years In a medical / clinical office, including previous experience with computerized scheduling systems and supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in computerized medical billing environment and good knowledge of third party carrier billing requirements.
  • Knowledge of ICD 9 and CPT coding and medical terminology.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess basic mathematical skills.
  • Must have ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with a variety of individuals.

This position has a hiring range of $18.33 - $29.96
