Overview & Summary of the position

The Senior Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating and executing Dome’s field safety program across diverse construction projects.

Acting as a safety expert, this role provides essential support to internal teams, Trade Partners, Business Partners, and Clients to ensure the safe and compliant execution of all work.

With a deep knowledge of construction operations, safety regulations, and effective work practices, the Senior Safety Specialist collaborates closely with Operations, Field Staff, and Leadership Teams.

The role focuses on fostering a culture of safety through trainings, meetings, and serving as a subject matter expert on construction site safety, while ensuring the necessary resources are available to teams and regulatory agencies.

Highly visible and integral to maintaining safety standards across the organization, this position is key to the safe and successful completion of projects.

Typically based in areas such as the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego, or Thousand Oaks, the Senior Safety Specialist travels frequently to jobsites and may be assigned to specific locations as needed.

This position reports to the Safety Director.

Required education / experience

  • At least 12 years working knowledge of CAL / OSHA construction safety orders or other applicable regulations relating to employee safety and accident prevention, including field safety.
  • Must have 12 or more years prior experience supporting and implementing construction safety related process improvements and programs.
  • 12 years or more actual experience in commercial construction working in the field with the project teams, client, trade & business partners supporting construction site safety.
  • 12 or more years’ experience in training and educating others in construction site safety topics both large & small groups in field & office settings.
  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience working in construction sites identifying known or potential safety hazards and exposures and recommending corrective action(s) and or collaboratively identifying solutions and alternative options.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • A. degree in a safety and health-related field.
  • In lieu of the above requirements, equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST)

  • Certified Safety Director (CSD)

  • Capable of interpreting complex technical documents, writing clear policies and procedures, and training internal trainers.
  • Proactively contributes to the development and implementation of safety plans, ensures compliance, and mediates safety-related conflicts within teams.
  • Actively builds and maintains strong relationships with Field Operations and external partners, including industry groups and regulatory bodies, to advance safety initiatives.
  • Operates as a resource to projects and staff, enabling success by reducing barriers and facilitating effective solutions.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

  • Manage and respond to safety concerns by coordinating with customer representatives, employees, and Trade / Business Partners to handle safety concerns, investigate incidents, and promote a safety-first culture.
  • Promote Dome safety culture by participating in contractor safety forums and client meetings ensuring consistency in safety communications and behaviors.
  • Develop and implement safety plans by collaborating with Estimating and Project Management Teams. Planning responses to hazards, prepare site-specific safety plans, and ensuring compliance during project execution.
  • Oversee Field Safety Programs by conducting safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to ensure adherence to safety programs and regulations (CAL / OSHA, etc.

  • Lead Incident Management Program by investigating incidents, determining root causes, implementing corrective actions, and coordinating return-to-work (RTW) processes for injured employees.
  • Facilitate Safety Meetings by conducting safety orientations for new hires, leading training programs, and engaging in regular safety meetings to ensure team-wide safety knowledge and compliance.
  • Ensure compliance and audit preparation by monitoring jobsite conditions for compliance with CAL / OSHA regulations and Dome safety programs, assisting in insurance audits and Trade Partner compliance.
  • Track safety metrics and recommend improvements by analyzing safety trends, tracking performance metrics, and providing data-driven recommendations for safety program improvement.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively by engaging with internal and external stakeholders to resolve safety issues, present safety progress to management, and foster an inclusive work environment that encourages diverse problem-solving.
  • Utilize advanced safety knowledge by applying expertise in safety, environmental testing protocols, and regulatory compliance while leveraging technology and strong organizational skills to manage safety programs effectively.
  • Daily travel to multiple facilities to oversee health and safety operations, including locations in the Greater Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, Thousand Oaks, and San Diego regions.
  • This position may require :
  • Travel between company office locations (including locations in the Greater Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, Thousand Oaks, and San Diego regions) with occasional overnight stays lasting up to one week.
  • Attendance at professional conferences, seminars, and training sessions, potentially requiring occasional overnight stays lasting up to one week.
  • The role demands flexibility to travel for 5-25% of the working time.

  • This role involves regular visits to construction sites and office visits.
  • Sitting / Standing : remaining in stationary positions often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Fast-paced project site and project office environment.
  • Required to work both inside and outside in heat / cold, wet / humid, and dry / arid conditions.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to maintain safety and prevent exposure to harmful materials.
  • The environment may be exposed to prolonged loud noises and may contain scents and fragrances.
  • Occasionally required to position objects, operate tools or controls, and maneuver in confined or awkward spaces.
  • Required to ascend and / or descend ladders or stairs to reach work areas.
  • Must have the ability to work at height, in enclosed or confined spaces, and climb stairs and ladders in a construction / plant environment.
  • Driving : Travel is required. Operation of a motorized passenger vehicle.
  • Speaking : expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately.
  • Hearing : ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and / or other sounds in person speech, telephone, and virtual remote speech.
  • Keyboarding : working on a computer entering text or data into a computer or other machine through a traditional keyboard.
  • Vision : specific vision abilities including close vision and ability to adjust focus. Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less including use of computers.

  • Lift, push, pull : Able to push, pull, lift up to 20 pounds at time, ability to lift files, laptops, office desk items, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool, as necessary.
  • Occasionally required to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
