POSITION SUMMARY

The Chassis Line Assembler is responsible for the assembly and installation process of the fire apparatus chassis. They will bolt the frame of the chassis together while monitoring the torque of the bolts.

The Chassis Line Assembler will install a variety of different equipment to the frame such as fuel tanks, air tanks, axels, and cab latches as called for in the specifications.

Also, they will ensure that the frame is square and meets the detentions according to prints and the specifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Bolts the frame of the chassis together while monitoring the torque of the bolts.
  • Installs a variety of different equipment to the frame such as fuel tanks, air tanks, axels, and cab latches as called for in the specifications.
  • Ensures that the frame is square and meets the detentions according to prints and the specifications.
  • Installs brake lines, wire harnesses, plumbing, air lines and other equipment onto the chassis.
  • Assembles the engine to the fire apparatus by putting together engine component to make a working build.
  • Installs wire harnesses and electrical equipment, performing cable management throughout the process.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required by management to meet the needs of the organization and our members.

  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude.
  • Able to follow written and verbal directions and do so with a positive attitude.
  • Able to read and work from blueprints / spec book.
  • Ability to identify quality issues and recognize changes within ones production process and make the needed adjustments.
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately and precisely and have a basic understanding on how to use basic hand tools, shear, and brake press.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and work well in a team environment.
  • You recognize the importance and adherence to all safety policies in order to promote a safe working environment, for everyone at the organization.
  • Understand the need to support the organization to work effectively by adhering to the attendance and punctuality standards and does not burden co-workers and supervisors unfairly with unnecessary and unplanned absences and lateness.

Language Skills :

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

Mathematical Skills :

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability :

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills :

  • Ability to perform simple tasks, such as typing a letter and using basic commands such as setting tabs, opening and closing files, simple formulas.
  • Prior experience with a computer terminal and / or PC.

Decision Making :

  • Responsibilities are guided by a set of guidelines that provide methods for problem solving.
  • Decisions are made within these guidelines initially, and a supervisor is informed afterwards.
  • Supervisor regularly reviews the activities to determine if the guidelines have been followed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is in a general shop where different tasks are completed and has access to all welfare facilities. The building is temperature controlled.

There is also constant noise with all the machines that are used inside the shop which will cause a difficulty of hearing.

Besides noise, some of the machines produce vibrations when being used. Most of the hazards come from machines but following proper procedures should minimize risk.

This position may require contact with corrosives / oil / detergents but by following safety procedures, risk should be minimized.

Sometimes this position requires to be above floor level and work in confined spaces.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires standing, walking, and the use of hands for the entire shift. It can become very loud in the shop with many machines being used at once.

With constant noise, talking or hearing can be difficult. During shifts, some projects require the use of feet, hands, and fingers for over 60 minutes at a time.

This position requires reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling sometimes. The use of knees, legs, back, shoulders, and arms can range from 30 to 60 minutes.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, and good depth perception.

All positions require the ability to lift 50 pounds.
