At Houston Methodist the Neurophysiology(EMG) Technologist II position is responsible for highly complexnerve conduction recordings and monitoring additionalneurophysiological phenomena by means of appropriate techniques.

This position also provides advanced documentation to ensurecomprehensive timely and accurate recording accounting andreporting of results and develops clinical findings.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Communicates withthe patients to explain the test procedure and provides answers totheir questions to ensure accurateresults.
  • Interfaces withphysicians department staff and other disciplines to evaluate andmodify testing asneeded.
  • Functions as ateam member responding willingly and positively to colleagues needsfor assistance and partnership. Promotes a positive workenvironment with the interprofessional careteam.
  • Trains and mentorsless experienced technologists asappropriate.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensuresaccurate testing procedures by planning and organizing materialsand supplies in the appropriate work areas prior to patientarrival.
  • Uses advancedknowledge to determine necessary procedures and equipment based onphysicianinstructions.
  • Preparespatients by applying a variety of surface electrodes as requiredfor testing. Obtains standard recordings as directed by theelectromyographer.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Recognizesartifacts and takes appropriate action to eliminate them.Recognizes and eliminates causes of electrical interference.

Describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed duringtests.

  • Makes appropriatecalibration procedures of the electromyography (EMG) apparatus forstandard recordings; inspects and assures proper maintenance of EMGneedle and relatedequipment.
  • Identifiesopportunities for process improvement providing recommendationsimpacting department quality and safety targets through peertopeeraccountability reporting near misses and collaborating with theinterprofessionalteam.
  • Assists in gatheringdata for quality improvement projects. Contributes to meetingdepartment targets for quality andsafety.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Collaborates withphysicians to ensure accurate coding and charge capture. Maintainsequipment and supplies effectively and efficiently.

Independentlymanages time effectively and prioritizes daily responsibilities andassignments. Role models effective time management collaboration tomeet the overall demands of thedepartment.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leads departmentalactivities due to advanced knowledge level including researchactivities. Offers innovative solutions through advancedparticipation in performance improvement projects and departmentactivities.
  • Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continual development. Completes and updates MyDevelopment plan on an ongoing basis including the development ofadvanced skills.

EDUCATION

  • HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
  • Graduate of anaccredited electroneurodiagnostic technologyprogram

WORKEXPERIENCE

Three years in aclinic and / or hospital setting performing varying levels ofelectrodiagnosticprocedures

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • CNCTCertified Nerve Conduction Technologist (ABEM)or
  • RNCST Registed Nerve Conduction Technologist(AAET) and
  • BLS Basic Life Support (AHA)

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ANDABILITIES

  • Demonstrates theskills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assignedjob determined through ongoing skills competency assessments andperformanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Competence inthe use of computers and neurodiagnosticequipment
  • Maintains clearcommunication with customers regarding mutual expectations duringtesting
  • Ability to takepersonal responsibility and accountability for correcting customerserviceproblems
