Nature of Responsibilities :
The Director of Student Support and Case Management will lead and oversee a comprehensive campus-wide program aimed at supporting students facing behavioral and / or mental health, physical health, and psycho-social challenges.
This role involves direct case management services, including interventions, referrals, and follow-up support. The Director will collaborate closely with assistant deans, academic deans, healthcare providers, Student Affairs professionals, and families, while managing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
This role provides supervision and guidance to the Assistant Deans on CARE matters and will also work in partnership with other Associate Deans in the office to ensure proper case management.
This role will serve as the primary administrator of the database management system ensuring proper data entry for all case management matters.
Key Responsibilities :
Integrated Student Conduct and Case Management (70%)
Holistic Case Management : Manage student matters that involve both disciplinary issues and / or significant mental health, physical health, or psycho-social challenges.
Conduct thorough evaluations to assess the underlying factors contributing to behavioral issues and develop comprehensive intervention plans.
Serve as a mediator in conflicts involving students, facilitating adaptable and restorative resolutions that address both the immediate misconduct and the student’s broader needs.
- Perform comprehensive case management for moderate / high level student matters duties for assigned students, including psycho-social evaluations and intervention plan formulation.
- Collaborate with various University departments to resolve issues and expedite support services, including crisis intervention and medical care access.
- Maintain accurate case records and ensure timely follow-up to monitor compliance with recommendations.
- Engage with parents as needed to provide support for students’ needs.
- Offer guidance to University staff regarding case management processes and record access.
Oversee all aspects of the DukeReach / CARE / case management program, including outreach education, training, and resource distribution for faculty, staff, and students.
Serve as a trainer and consultant on recognizing and responding to students at risk, promoting effective reporting practices.
Management Recruit, train, evaluate, and manage performance of the Assistant Deans and graduate interns, fostering a high-performance team environment.
Meet regularly with Assistant Deans to review case statuses, provide case consultation, support, and direction for Assistant Deans.
Assist with case management for the office by reviewing open cases, running case data reports, and ensuring timely closing of case files by Assistant Deans.
Training, Education, and Policy Development (20%)
Educational Outreach : Develop and deliver training programs for students, faculty, and staff that integrate understanding of university policies and processes related to student behavioral conduct, mental health awareness and crisis management.
Promote a culture of care and accountability across the campus community.
Policy Integration : Assist in the development of university policies that reflect an integrated approach to student conduct and / or well-being.
Provide insights and recommendations based on case trends and emerging best practices in both conduct and mental health fields.
Stakeholder Engagement : Regularly meet with key constituencies, including neighborhood associations, local officials, and law enforcement, to address shared concerns and promote a unified approach to student conduct and welfare.
Administrative Responsibilities (10%)
Data Management and Reporting : Maintain detailed and accurate records of all student cases and related interventions in compliance with university policies.
Analyze data to identify trends and prepare reports that inform policy and procedural enhancements.
Assessment and Continuous Improvement : Contribute to ongoing assessment efforts within the Dean of Students office related to case assessment, evaluation, adjudication and resolution.
Evaluate the effectiveness of integrated conduct and case management approaches, recommending improvements as needed.
Other Relevant Duties as Necessary : Tasks or responsibilities that may not be explicitly outlined in the job description but are expected to be performed as needed to support university goals and operations.
Employee may be required to adapt to changing circumstances, take on additional tasks, or assist in areas outside their primary role when the situation demands it.
Participation and Representation : Participate in department, division, and university committees and task forces, including the Student Behavioral Assessment Team.
Represent the department at campus events, presentations, and professional conferences.
Preferred Qualifications :
Education : Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, social work, public health, or a related field. Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Experience : A minimum of three years (post-master’s degree) of relevant experience in higher education or a closely related setting, with demonstrated experience in both student conduct, case management and / or crisis response.
- Skills and Competencies :
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive and complex situations.
- In-depth knowledge of student conduct systems, legal issues, and mental health resources.
- Proficiency in managing both behavioral and health-related interventions within the conduct process.
- Strong critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects and work autonomously or as part of a team.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proven experience in managing a case management support team and supervising professional staff
- Background in advising / counseling students and experience with restorative justice practices in a conduct setting or behavioral conduct adjudication.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work generally requires six years experience student OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE personnel / services, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skillsnecessary to manage a major program area within student affairs.
