Salary range : The current salary range for this position is $139,800-$246,900 (9-month academic year salary), however, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for Director of the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing , reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research.

The successful applicant will also be appointed to a tenured full professorship on campus. Upon completion of their tenure as Institute Director, which is for an initial period of five years with the possibility of renewal, the position will revert to that of a regular professor.

The candidate's designated home department is open, but should be in a field closely related to the theory of computing.

We seek a visionary leader who will identify important theoretical topics, oversee the Institute's staffing and operations, lead the Institute's fundraising efforts, and connect with the international theoretical computer science community to attract leaders and participants for its programs.

The Director will :

  • Serve as the scientific and administrative leader of the Institute;
  • Guide the scientific vision of the Institute and participate in the selection of scientific programs and of the participants in those programs;
  • Steward the relationship with the Simons Foundation, which includes completing a fundraising match for a $25 million pledge from the Simons Foundation to the Simons Institute.
  • Lead the Institute's efforts to attract funding from public and private sources to support its growth and long-term sustainability;
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for building research collaborations with local, regional, national and worldwide institutions;
  • Interact effectively with departments and research units within the University of California and in the broader scientific and industrial community;
  • Support the development of outreach and educational activities that communicate the nature and aims of the theory of computation to scientific colleagues, students and the general public;
  • Lead efforts to ensure that the Institute fosters a diverse, equitable, and inclusive climate.

About the Institute : The Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing is dedicated to collaborative research in theoretical computer science.

Established on July 1, 2012 with a grant of $60 million from the Simons Foundation, the Institute is housed in Calvin Lab, a dedicated building on the Berkeley campus.

Its goal is to bring together the world's leading researchers in theoretical computer science and related fields, as well as the next generation of outstanding young scholars, to explore deep unsolved problems about the nature and limits of computation.
