Position Focus :
The Yale Library in New Haven, Connecticut, seeks a collaborative and strategic professional for the position of Metadata Services Unit (MSU) Manager.
MSU is one of two units within Resource Discovery Services (RDS), a department of Library Technical Services.
- Reporting to the Director of RDS, the MSU Manager oversees a unit that performs batch level metadata editing; database reporting and analysis;
- data extract, transformation, and loads (ETL), schema mapping across discovery systems; metadata policy guidance and documentation;
project design and management; authority control; research data information management, as well as linked data, Yale’s Open Metadata Service, and BIBFRAME implementation.
The unit's work requires a high level of collaboration with colleagues across the library and broader communities in developing and maintaining data standards, practices, and tools.
- The MSU Manager participates in recruiting, managing, training, developing, and directly supervising unit staff; plans, manages, and assesses process and workflow changes;
- fosters a team approach to the work; establishes metrics, tracks progress, and regularly reports on the unit’s work; oversees projects and participates in library- and university-wide committees and task forces;
and participates in regional, national, and international professional activities both to contribute to the profession and to grow individually as a librarian.
As part of the RDS leadership team, the MSU Manager participates in the development and implementation of department- and library-wide goals and initiatives;
develops leadership and management skills in support of growing organizational development and health; and contributes to an organizational culture that promotes excellence, accountability, inclusiveness, collaboration, continuous learning, and effective communication.

Essential Duties
1. Under the general direction of the Director of Resource Discovery Services, provides vision and strategic leadership, as well as training, mentorship, and growth opportunities for members of MSU.
2. Develops job descriptions and leads unit-level recruitment efforts.3. Develops goals for the unit and individual staff members, monitors capacity and performance, and sets priorities for the unit.
4. Ensures staff are given the tools, training, and project management needed to perform their assignments.5. Receives work requests on behalf of MSU, evaluates nature of tasks, and assigns them, as appropriate, to staff members.
6. Collaborates with colleagues in Monographic Processing Services, Electronic Resources and Serials Management, Library IT, Special Collections Technical Services, and other departments and units, to ensure that MSU meets collection, staff, and user needs.
7. Works independently with varied user groups and task forces in a complex organization, and functions collaboratively in a team environment.
8. Serves on library and university committees and participates in professional activities outside of Yale.9. Monitors developments, technologies, trends, and best practices in the profession to ensure innovation and overall excellence.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience as a library metadata expert.
Demonstrated metadata management may be substituted for formal training. Demonstrated experience with library systems used to manage, describe, and maintain complex collections.
Demonstrated experience with standards, systems, and best practices related to library metadata and resource discovery. Demonstrated experience in formation of metadata policy, strategy, and best practices.
Demonstrated experience with metadata creation, transformation, remediation, design, and maintenance. Demonstrated experience planning for and managing complex projects and workflow assessment.
Demonstrated experience tailoring oral and written communications to work effectively and collaboratively with various stakeholders.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Experience with managing authority control workflows and knowledge of library linked data and identity management principles and technologies.
