Assistant Professor Faculty Positions

Through M-PACT, the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce three (3) new tenure-track Assistant Professor positions with research interests that align with biomedical and / or health science research relevant to the field of public health.

Ranked among the top five schools of public health in the country, Michigan Public Health educates and trains more than 1,300 graduate and undergraduate students each year.

With more than 190 faculty and researchers across six academic departments and numerous collaborative and interdisciplinary centers and institutes, we produce impactful research and impact aimed at creating a healthier, more equitable world.

Our interdisciplinary school-wide research priorities include building health equity, creating healthy and equitable cities, preventing firearm injuries, combating infectious diseases, and pursuing environmental and reproductive justice.

The School of Public Health is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools within the University of Michigan.

We strive to recruit faculty who demonstrate a sustained commitment to contributing to a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for all members of our community.

Health equity is at the core of our work at the School of Public Health. With a long history of community-based participatory research, impactful scholarship on health disparities and equity both in the US and across the globe, and an interdisciplinary and collaborative faculty with expertise in racism and discrimination, health communication, healthcare policy, environmental justice, social epidemiology, and more, we pursue health equity through research, teaching, and action (e.

g. community engagement, interventions, informing policy, etc.).

We invite applications and nominations for a faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor (i.e., only applicants who have not previously held a tenure-track faculty position will be considered).

Candidates will be expected to maintain a robust, ongoing research program in biomedical and / or health science research within a Public Health field, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Public Health, and have research expertise appropriate for effectively mentoring trainees at the undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels in Public Health.

Successful candidates will be expected to maintain extramural funding for an active research program at the University of Michigan.

Required Qualifications*

A terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Public Health or related field from an accredited institution is required. Preference will be given to those with expertise in areas that augment and expand current programs and research activities within the School of Public Health.

To be considered, this must be the applicant's first tenure-track faculty position. Assistant Professor candidates should demonstrate academic excellence and independence by :

  • demonstrating a strong research background in an area of biomedical and health science research within the discipline of Public Health.
  • publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research in a Public Health related area that includes, or ideally focuses on, populations typically underserved in research.
  • having independent research funding or outstanding potential for future funding in interdisciplinary work that advances the diversity of thought in Public Health.
  • demonstrating a track-record of promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within their field of study through their research, teaching / mentoring, and / or service activities as well as a commitment to continue to promote DEI in the future through these and / or other activities.
  • showing evidence of formal and / or informal teaching and mentoring experience with undergraduate and / or graduate students.
  • having proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture, and ability to consistently demonstrate our school's core values; and
